Effects of prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants on neonatal Outcomes:A mother-child cohort (Shanghai, China)

Su-Su Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of POPs exposure on birth outcomes. Findings showed adverse effects of prenatal exposure to HCB, β-HCH and p,p'-DDE on birth head circumference, particularly in girls. Further research is needed to explore gender differences and the effects of POPs on offspring growth and development.

Parental Lead Exposure Promotes Neurobehavioral Disorders and Hepatic Dysfunction in Mouse Offspring

Hasan Ul Banna et al.

Summary: The study found that continuous exposure to lead from fetus to adult results in more severe impacts on neurobehavioral changes and liver toxicity, including increased anxiety-like behavior, memory and learning impairments, lower BChE activity, higher lead levels in the brain, elevated serum hepatic enzyme activities, and more pronounced hepatic tissue injury compared to adult exposure only.

Hair, serum and urine chromium levels in children with cognitive defects: A systematic review and meta-analysis of case control studies

G. M. Rabiul Islam et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the relationship between environmental chromium exposure and cognitive development in children. The results showed no significant differences in hair, serum, and urine chromium levels between children with cognitive deficits and healthy control children. Larger studies using standardized criteria and longitudinal assessment are needed to further investigate the dose-response effect of childhood chromium exposure on cognitive development.

Summary: This study found that prenatal co-exposures to lead, mercury, zinc, and selenium have long-term influences on the neuropsychological outcomes of school-age children, as assessed through SDQ and IDS evaluations. The effects were mainly observed in behavioral and emotional problems, as well as cognitive and psychomotor development.

Blood's Concentration of Lead and Arsenic Associated with Anemia in Peruvian Children

Ana Maria Linares et al.

Summary: This study found that 20% of Peruvian infants had anemia, with a high prevalence of microcytosis and hypochromia. Lead and arsenic concentrations were significantly higher in older infants, but not associated with sex, anthropomorphic parameters, or infant hemogram changes. Iron supplementation reduced the likelihood of low hemoglobin levels, while herbal tea intake was linked to microcytosis and hypochromia.

Association between prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants and neurodevelopment in early life: A mother-child cohort (Shanghai, China)

Susu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and neurodevelopment in 18-month-old toddlers in Shanghai, China. The study found that beta-HCH concentration in cord serum was negatively related to motor development scores at 18 months, while p,p'-DDE was positively associated with language development. However, prenatal HCB levels were not linked to any of the Bayley-III subscales at 18 months.

Sex-specific neurotoxic effects of heavy metal pollutants: Epidemiological, experimental evidence and candidate mechanisms

Meethila Gade et al.

Summary: The heavy metals lead, mercury, cadmium, manganese, and arsenic can have gender-specific neurotoxic effects, including cognitive and motor impairments. Males and females may respond differently to exposure to these metals and show variations in their susceptibility and vulnerabilities. The mechanisms behind gender-specific differential susceptibility to heavy metal neurotoxicity involve hormonal, genetic, metabolic, anatomical, neurochemical, and epigenetic factors.

Summary: The study found that both hair arsenic concentrations and arsenicosis prevalence were significantly higher in the cognitive-impaired group compared to the cognitive-normal group. Furthermore, the distance from the Realgar Plant was positively correlated with MMSE scores and negatively correlated with the prevalence of cognitive impairment. Hair arsenic concentrations were negatively correlated with MMSE scores.

Thyroid hormone: sex-dependent role in nervous system regulation and disease

Shounak Baksi et al.

Summary: Thyroid hormone plays a crucial role in regulating various functions in the body, related to metabolism, cell differentiation, and nervous system development, and can lead to nervous system-related problems if its levels are altered. It is associated with neuropsychiatric disorders and shows sex-specific differences in neuronal signaling. Steroid hormones are considered primary regulators in male- and female-specific neuronal signaling, but thyroid hormone may also play a key role in regulating brain signaling in a sex-specific manner.
