Cross-oceanic distribution and origin of microplastics in the subsurface water of the South China Sea and Eastern Indian Ocean

Changjun Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant differences in the abundance of marine microplastics in different aquatic environments in the cross-oceanic region of the South China Sea and Eastern Indian Ocean. Coastal regions showed higher levels of microplastics compared to open ocean areas, indicating a significant contribution of land-based sources. Additionally, no significant correlation was found between the physical and chemical properties of water and the abundance of microplastics.

Temporal Trends of Persistent Organic Pollutants across Africa after a Decade of MONET Passive Air Sampling

Kevin B. White et al.

Summary: This study reports the concentrations of 20 POPs monitored in 9 African countries, showing significant declines in the concentrations of many POPs over the past decade while others remain stable or even increasing. The elevated concentrations at some sites are primarily due to sustained local emissions, while the low concentrations at Mt. Kenya represent the continental background level primarily influenced by long-range transport.

Zhe Hao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the distribution of three typical POPs in the Eastern China Marginal Seas and found that it was significantly influenced by river input and regional hydrodynamics. High concentrations of POPs were mainly found in areas such as the Yellow River Estuary and East China Sea, posing a threat to local aquaculture.

Dechlorane Plus in the Global Atmosphere

Jasmin K. Schuster et al.

Summary: The study found that Dechlorane plus is globally distributed in air, with urban sites showing significantly higher concentrations compared to background, rural, and agricultural sites. The anti-DP/syn-DP ratio was consistent across different site categories, indicating similar long-range transport potential for both isomers. Retrospective analysis also revealed declining levels of DP at urban sites in Paris and Toronto from 2005 to 2011.

Xiaomei Zhen et al.

Summary: This study is the first comprehensive investigation of the concentration and fate of DP in the Bohai Sea, showing that the highest water DP levels were found in the river estuary in Tianjin due to urbanization and e-waste emission. Simulation of DP in seawater suggests a continuous increase in the future, with riverine discharge being the dominant input source.

Organophosphate Esters in the Canadian Arctic Ocean

Roxana Suehring et al.

Summary: Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) were detected in surface water and sediment samples from yearly sampling in the Canadian Arctic. Chlorinated OPEs (Cl-OPEs) had higher concentrations in water samples compared to non-chlorinated OPEs, while concentrations in sediment samples were relatively similar. Samples from the Mackenzie River plume indicated riverine discharge as a source of OPEs in the Canadian Arctic.

Distribution and characteristics of microplastics and phthalate esters from a freshwater lake system in Lesser Himalayas

Kumar Ajay et al.

Summary: This study discovered the presence of microplastics and phthalic acid esters in the aquatic system of the Indian subcontinent, potentially deriving from plastic paints, boats, or synthetic products, with higher abundances and concentrations found near areas impacted by human activities. There is a clear correlation between the abundance of microplastics and the concentration of phthalic acid esters.

Summary: The study analyzed wastewater and sediment samples from city sewer systems of Lithuania, Poland, and Denmark to determine the sources and levels of phthalate acid esters (PAEs) contamination. Lithuania showed the highest contamination with DEHP, while Poland had the highest concentration of DMP. Further monitoring of PAEs in wastewater and sludge is recommended to reduce or predict potential risks to hydrobiots and human health.

Anna Hayes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of microplastic polymers in urban and non-urban settings in Adelaide, South Australia, and found that areas with higher urbanization had higher levels of microplastics and a greater variety of polymers. The majority of microplastics identified in the study were from recyclable products, highlighting a lack of recycling practices by the inhabitants of that area.

Summary: Soil samples were collected at 61 sites in South Korea for persistent organic pollutants monitoring, revealing higher BFR concentrations at industrial sites compared to suburban sites. The primary source of contamination in soil was found to be commercial deca-BDE mixtures, with the influence of HBCDDs and TBBPA potentially coming from commercial products and environmental transformation.

Occurrence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risk assessment of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) in aquatic environments - A critical review

Rui Hou et al.

Summary: Novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) are emerging as alternative flame retardants to legacy compounds, with concerns raised over their presence, bioaccumulation, fate, and risks in aquatic environments. NBFRs show source-dependent distribution, high bioaccumulative properties, resistance to degradation processes, and sorption to sludge and sediments in aquatic environments. Ecological risk assessments have suggested potential risks of NBFRs primarily in source areas. Further research is needed to address knowledge gaps in monitoring, toxicokinetics, transformation processes, and ecological risk assessments of NBFRs in aquatic environments.
