Marine microbial Mn(II) oxidation mediates Cr(III) oxidation and isotope fractionation

Marzia Miletto et al.

Summary: Stable chromium isotopes have been used as a paleoredox proxy to track atmospheric oxygenation, with previous belief that Cr oxidation is limited to terrestrial settings. However, recent research shows rapid marine Cr(III) oxidation linked to microbial Mn(II) oxidation, challenging the traditional view. Initial partial oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) can cause a small isotope fractionation, calling for a reevaluation of the link between Cr isotope values and atmospheric oxygenation.

Effect of sodium silicate on lead release from lead service lines

Anushka Mishrra et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of sodium silicate addition on lead release from lead service lines. It was found that sodium silicate effectively reduced lead concentrations in the water and gradually decreased lead release from the pipes.

Impact of sodium silicate on lead release and colloid size distributions in drinking water

Bofu Li et al.

Summary: Sodium silicate has been used as a corrosion control treatment for lead in drinking water, but it is found to be inferior to orthophosphate in circumneutral pH water with low alkalinity. Excess silicate can also be highly detrimental to controlling lead release.

Rates of Abiotic MnII Oxidation by O2: Influence of Various Multidentate Ligands at High pH

James J. Morgan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the rates of abiotic Mn-II oxidation by O-2 in the presence of low concentrations of several complex-forming model ligands in bicarbonate-carbonate buffered laboratory solutions of different pH values. The observed rates of Mn-II oxidation decreased with increasing ligand concentration for all four ligands tested. Different ligands showed varying profiles with time and magnitudes of decrease in initial oxidation rates.
