Organic Coating Reduces Hygroscopic Growth of Phase-Separated Aerosol Particles

Weijun Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that secondary aerosol particles exhibit a liquid-liquid phase-separated structure, with the thickness of the organic shell having a significant impact on the hygroscopic growth and phase transition process of the particles. The thicker the organic shell, the lower the hygroscopicity of the particles at low relative humidity, and the phase transition of the core from solid to liquid occurs earlier.

Explosive Secondary Aerosol Formation during Severe Haze in the North China Plain

Jianfei Peng et al.

Summary: Frequent severe haze events with high levels of fine aerosols in the North China Plain have profound impacts on human health, weather, and climate. The haze formation mechanisms involve sources, formation, and transformation of aerosol species. Recent advances have shown the importance of new particle formation and aerosol growth driven by photochemistry and aqueous chemistry in understanding secondary aerosol formation.

Unexpected Oligomerization of Small α-Dicarbonyls for Secondary Organic Aerosol and Brown Carbon Formation

Yixin Li et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that the oligomerization of small alpha-dicarbonyls on sub-micrometer aerosols leads to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and brown carbon (BrC) more efficiently upon exposure to atmospherically relevant concentrations. Carbenium ion-mediated nucleophilic addition, interfacial electric field-induced attraction, and synergetic oligomerization involving organic/inorganic species are identified as the key mechanisms for the distinct aerosol growth and light absorption in the presence of methylglyoxal.

Multigeneration Production of Secondary Organic Aerosol from Toluene Photooxidation

Yixin Li et al.

Summary: Photooxidation of toluene can lead to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and light-absorbing brown carbon (BrC) through a complex series of chemical reactions, involving the production of dicarbonyls and carboxylic functional groups as primary precursors. The study shows that volatile dicarbonyls form nonvolatile oligomers and light-absorbing nitrogen heterocycles/heterochains at high humidity, while organic acids contribute to aerosol carboxylates through ionic dissociation or acid-base reactions over a wide range of humidity levels. These findings highlight the important role of toluene in SOA/BrC formation due to the unique functionalities of dicarbonyls and organic acids in aerosol-phase reactions.

Seeded Crystal Growth of Internally Mixed Organic-Inorganic Aerosols: Impact of Organic Phase State

Shuichi B. Ushijima et al.

Summary: Atmospheric aerosols are complex mixtures of inorganic and organic components. This study focused on the efflorescence of (NH4)2SO4/organic particles and found that poly(ethylene glycol) 400 did not inhibit seeded crystal growth, while raffinose inhibited heterogeneous efflorescence at lower humidities. Lower humidity led to increased viscosity, preventing the diffusion of water and ions, and thus inhibiting efflorescence of aerosols. The observed efflorescence at higher humidity suggests that collisions can induce efflorescence of mixed aerosols.
