First Report on the Bioaccumulation and Trophic Transfer of Perfluoroalkyl Ether Carboxylic Acids in Estuarine Food Web

Yanan Li et al.

Summary: This research provides the first published data on the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer characteristics of PFECAs in a source-impacted estuary. It found that certain PFECAs biomagnify along the food chain, while others undergo biomagnification. This poses exposure risks and potential health hazards to consumers.

Nontargeted Analysis Study Reporting Tool: A Framework to Improve Research Transparency and Reproducibility

Katherine T. Peter et al.

Summary: Non-targeted analysis (NTA) workflows using mass spectrometry are becoming increasingly popular in various disciplines, but there is still a lack of universally accepted reporting standards. To address this issue, researchers have developed the NTA Study Reporting Tool (SRT), which has been shown to be effective in guiding study design, manuscript writing, and evaluating NTA reporting quality through analysis of published articles.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide-dimer acid (HFPO-DA or GenX) alters maternal and fetal glucose and lipid metabolism and produces neonatal mortality, low birthweight, and hepatomegaly in the Sprague-Dawley rat

Justin M. Conley et al.

Summary: HFPO-DA is a developmental toxicant in rats, causing biological changes in maternal and fetal livers, decreased pup birth weight and increased neonatal mortality, as well as metabolic abnormalities at birth. The potency of HFPO-DA in rats is comparable to PFOS based on serum concentration, and the spectrum of adverse effects is consistent with other PFAS such as PFOS and PFOA.

Target, Nontarget, and Suspect Screening and Temporal Trends of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Marine Mammals from the South China Sea

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: The study conducted target, nontarget, and suspect screening of PFASs in the liver of Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins and finless porpoises stranded in the South China Sea between 2012 and 2018. Perfluorooctane sulfonate and 6:2 Cl-PFESA were the predominant PFASs found, with significantly higher concentrations in dolphin liver samples than porpoise liver samples. Temporal trends indicated increasing pollution by emerging PFASs, and a risk assessment highlighted potential reproductive injury from the emerging PFAS 6:2 Cl-PFESA in cetaceans.

Tissue-Specific Distribution of Legacy and Novel Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Juvenile Seabirds

Anna R. Robuck et al.

Summary: The study analyzed 36 legacy and emerging PFAS in seabird tissues, with PFOS being the dominant compound and PFCAs dominating in brain. Emerging PFEAs were found to preferentially partition into blood. Future monitoring and toxicological studies should focus on novel PFAS and long-chain PFCAs in multiple tissues while exploring the unique binding mechanisms of multi-ether PFEAs.

Chronic exposure to PFO4DA and PFO5DoDA, two perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs), suppresses hepatic stress signals and disturbs glucose and lipid metabolism in male mice

Jiamiao Chen et al.

Summary: Perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs), including substances like PFO4DA and PFO5DoDA, have been found in polluted regions in both surface water and volunteer blood samples. The study showed that PFO5DoDA had a longer serum half-life and stronger hepatic bioaccumulation compared to PFO4DA, contributing to its stronger hepatotoxicity. Chronic exposure to these compounds led to weight gain, disrupted stress signals, and disturbed glucose and lipid metabolism in the liver.

Occurrence of Novel Perfluoroalkyl Ether Carboxylic Acids in River Water and Human Urine Quantified by a Simple Liquid-Liquid Microextraction Approach Coupled with LC-MS/MS

Jingzhi Yao et al.

Summary: A simple and sensitive liquid-liquid microextraction method coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was developed to quantify 11 emerging PFECAs in river water and human urine, with excellent detection limits and accuracy. Application of the method for the Xiaoqing River detected 10 of the 11 emerging PFECAs present, and PFMOAA was found in a high percentage of human urine samples, indicating the need for further research on its fate, transport, and exposure pathways.
