Suitability of Different Methods for Measuring Black Carbon Emissions from Marine Engines

Paivi Aakko-Saksa et al.

Summary: This study evaluated three candidate methods for measuring black carbon emissions, finding that the differences in results were generally small despite some variations. Differences in measurement results may be related to the ratio of light-absorbing compounds to sulphates, particle sizes, and morphologies.

Investigation of harbor craft activities for emission inventory calculation

Chas Frederickson et al.

Summary: This study emphasizes the importance of measuring real-world activity and emissions to accurately quantify emission contributions in an emission inventory. Comparing real-world activity data with historical values found in certification cycle, it was found that the certification cycle activity values did not reflect the actual activity of harbor craft vessels.

Evaluation of Nitrogen Oxide Emission Inventories and Trends for On-Road Gasoline and Diesel Vehicles

Katelyn A. Yu et al.

Summary: Fuel-based NOx emission inventories for California and the US over the period 1990-2020 showed a 70% decline in total on-road NOx emissions, with California leading the reduction by 48% compared to the national decrease. Further efforts have been taken in California to introduce new heavy-duty engines equipped with selective catalytic reduction systems, contributing to the steeper decrease in diesel NOx emissions in the state.

Determining black carbon emissions and activity from in-use harbor craft in Southern California

Hannah Schlaerth et al.

Summary: Black carbon emissions from diesel fuel combustion impact air quality and human health. This study focused on harbor craft emissions and found that tugboats spent a significant amount of non-idle operating time near California's coast, making them potential targets for emissions reductions.
