Enhancing mechanistic models with neural differential equations to predict electrodialysis fouling

Bram De Jaegher et al.

Summary: This study successfully described fouling of ion-exchange membranes by combining mechanistic description and machine learning models, and validated the improvement in predictive power. The results showed that attachment probability is influenced by current density and fouling layer size in a non-linear manner.

Nitrate, arsenic and fluoride removal by electrodialysis from brackish groundwater

Mehran Aliaskari et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of operational and water quality parameters on brackish water decontamination using a batch electrodialysis (ED) system. The results showed the significance of ionic characteristics in ED, with nitrate concentrations satisfying guideline threshold in all experiments. Lowest arsenic(V) concentration was 35 mu g/L at the highest electric potential, 25 V, demonstrating the potential of ED in environmentally friendly processes.

Current efficiency and selectivity reduction caused by co-ion leakage in electromembrane processes

Junghyo Yoon et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of hydrodynamic convective flow on the development of diffusion layers in both concentrate and diluate sides in the ICP desalination process. The higher convective flow in the concentrate side has been found to significantly improve current utilization drop at high operating currents, offering design implications for optimizing electromembrane processes for higher energy efficiency.

Surface Modification of Reverse Osmosis Membranes for Enhanced Boron Removal and Fouling Resistance

Jinmei Li et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that surface grafting of a functional layer on commercial RO membranes can enhance the boron removal rate and fouling resistance of seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) membranes. The optimized membrane showed improved permeate flux, high NaCl rejection, enhanced boron rejection, and excellent antifouling properties, paving the way for high-performance RO membranes with enhanced permselectivity and antifouling properties in SWRO desalination.
