Severe biological effects under present-day estuarine acidification in the seasonally variable Salish Sea

Nina Bednarsek et al.

Summary: Estuaries are highly vulnerable to coastal ocean acidification due to seasonal extremes and other stressors. This study investigated the biological response in pteropod Limacina helicina to estuarine acidification over three seasons and three years, identifying the most impacted habitats and time intervals. The development of a cumulative stress index allowed for the integration of spatial-temporal OA variation and highlighted the severe biological impacts.

Magnitude and Predictability of pH Fluctuations Shape Plastic Responses to Ocean Acidification

Mark C. Bitter et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that different habitats' environmental fluctuations have an impact on the plasticity of gene expression in mussels, showing population differences. Mussels native to habitats with large pH fluctuations and low predictability display reduced phenotypic plasticity in experimental treatments.

Oyster biomineralization under ocean acidification: From genes to shell

Kanmani Chandra Rajan et al.

Summary: The study suggests that mantle tissue in oysters can maintain biomineralization under ocean acidification conditions, with normal shell growth and mechanical properties. Ocean acidification is more of a 'dissolution problem' rather than a 'biomineralization problem' for resilient species.

Fluctuating selection and global change: a synthesis and review on disentangling the roles of climate amplitude, predictability and novelty

M. C. Bitter et al.

Summary: The popular approach of predicting population vulnerability based on historical climate fluctuations may be inaccurate due to the neglect of environmental predictability in driving patterns of evolution and responses to climate change. Experimental studies should aim to effectively test theoretical predictions while controlling for the degree of climate novelty, with marine systems being underrepresented in this venture. Manipulating both the amplitude and predictability of fluctuations can lead to better predictions of population vulnerability to climate change.
