Tracing and building up environmental justice considerations in the urban ecosystem service literature: A systematic review

Amalia Calderon-Argelich et al.

Summary: This article reviews the critical factors for the effective inclusion of an environmental justice lens in urban ecosystem services assessments, focusing on the study of distribution, procedural and recognitional dimensions of ES, and the consideration of social justice in relation to urban ES.

Understanding and conceptualizing how urban green and blue infrastructure affects the food, water, and energy nexus: A synthesis of the literature

Rodrigo A. Bellezoni et al.

Summary: Green and blue infrastructure in urban areas play a significant role in the food, water, and energy system, impacting food supply, energy saving, and climate change mitigation while also raising concerns about food safety and water contamination. Well-designed urban construction can help alleviate negative effects, highlighting the importance of deliberate and integrative policies to link GBI with each element in urban FWEN for increased resource efficiency and minimized environmental degradation.

The tree cover and temperature disparity in US urbanized areas: Quantifying the association with income across 5,723 communities

Robert I. McDonald et al.

Summary: Our study revealed that in large urban areas in the United States, low-income blocks tend to have less tree cover and higher temperatures compared to high-income blocks. Even after controlling for population density and built-up intensity, there is a significant positive association between income and tree cover.

Taking one step further ? Advancing the measurement of green and blue area accessibility using spatial network analysis

Manuel Wolff

Summary: Accessibility to green and blue areas (GBA) is crucial in urban environments, with quantification and mapping helping to provide equal access and detect mismatches. Different methods for measuring GBA accessibility, such as network analysis and buffer analysis, have their own advantages and pitfalls, with the potential to be combined for more accurate measurements in spatial planning. The complexity and connectivity of the network nodes play a key role in monitoring GBA accessibility, especially in dense urban environments.

Integrating circular economy in urban Amazon

Michel Xocaira Paes et al.

Summary: The Amazon is rich in biological and cultural diversity with established knowledge of natural resource management, but many areas are becoming urbanized and lacking basic urban services. Designing new development pathways based on the principles of the circular economy can align biodiversity conservation and urban changes effectively in the Amazon region.
