Contributions of climate, elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and land surface changes to variation in water use efficiency in Northwest China

Linshan Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the temporal and spatial variation of ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) in northwest China between 1982 and 2015. The results showed that gross primary productivity (GPP) and precipitation were the major driving factors for WUE variation, with water-related factors being more sensitive than energy-related factors. These findings have important implications for agricultural irrigation, water resources management, and ecological restoration in northwest China.

The driving factors of grassland water use efficiency along degradation gradients on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China

Zhenxia Ji et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial and temporal variation of grassland degradation and water use efficiency (WUE) on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. The results showed that WUE decreased gradually and had an increasing interannual variation. Grassland degradation increased from southeast to northwest. Temperature was identified as the main factor affecting WUE.

Greening-induced increase in evapotranspiration over Eurasia offset by CO2-induced vegetational stomatal closure

Xuanze Zhang et al.

Summary: This study estimated the increasing trend of evapotranspiration (ET) over Eurasia during 1982-2014 using a remote sensing-based water-carbon coupling model. The results showed that the increasing trend was mainly from vegetated regions in central and eastern Europe, India, and southeast China. Sensitivity experiments indicated that climate forcing and increased leaf area index (LAI) were the major drivers of the Eurasian ET trend.
