Towards improved fish tests in ecotoxicology - Efficient chronic and multi-generational testing with the killifish Nothobranchius furzeri

Eli S. J. Thore et al.

Summary: This article discusses how to conduct more relevant, time- and cost-efficient fish-based testing in ecotoxicology, introduces a fish model suitable for such research agendas – the turquoise killifish, and proposes an action plan for its introduction into accredited test guidelines.

Patterns of distribution and accumulation of trace metals in Hysterothylacium sp. (Nematoda), Phyllodistomum sp. (Digenea) and in its fish host Hoplias malabaricus, from two neotropical rivers in southeastern Brazil

Lucas Aparecido Rosa Leite et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential for trace metal accumulation of two parasitic species, Hysterothylacium sp. and Phyllodistomum sp., in the characiform fish Hoplias malabaricus. The results showed that metal concentrations in parasites were significantly higher than in host tissues, and uninfected fish had higher metal concentrations compared to infected fish.

Biological effects of multimetal (Ni, Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Zn) mixture in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss: Laboratory exposure and recovery study

Milda Stankeviciute et al.

Summary: The study revealed that exposure to a multimetal mixture at Maximum-Permissible-Concentrations (MPCs) induced genotoxic effects in fish blood erythrocytes and lethargic behavior in Oncorhynchus mykiss. Additionally, the study showed that O. mykiss had the ability to depurate chromium and nickel within 28 days but had a slower decrease in cadmium levels. Moreover, the fish demonstrated a significant capacity to restore DNA integrity after exposure to the metal mixture, although the recovery period was insufficient for erythrocytes with nuclear abnormalities to fully recover.
