Temperature changes between neighboring days and childhood asthma: a seasonal analysis in Shanghai, China

Xiaoning Lei et al.

Summary: The study found that temperature rise may increase the risk of childhood asthma exacerbation, while temperature drop might decrease the risks in warm seasons. There were no statistically significant influences in cool seasons.

Effects of ambient air pollution on childhood asthma exacerbation in the Philadelphia metropolitan Region, 2011-2014

Wanyu Huang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O-3) have an impact on pediatric asthma exacerbation, especially in warm and cold months. The risk of asthma exacerbation may be influenced by pollutant concentrations, potentially reaching thresholds at low to medium pollution levels.

Perinatal granulopoiesis and risk of pediatric asthma

Benjamin A. Turturice et al.

Summary: This study identified specific perinatal characteristics associated with pediatric asthma risk and identified transcriptional changes as mediators of this risk. The abundance of neutrophil-specific granules at birth was found to predict risk for pediatric asthma and pulmonary function in adolescence.

Trends of temperature variability: Which variability and what health implications?

Fang Guo et al.

Summary: Most climate change studies focus on changes in mean climate, while studies on temperature variability are comparatively limited. Short-term temperature variability is decreasing while long-term variability is increasing. Future research should consider the impact of different timescales on trend analysis and health impact studies.

Fine particulate matter concentration and composition and the incidence of childhood asthma

Eric Lavigne et al.

Summary: This study found that early childhood exposure to PM2.5 and its chemical components is associated with an increased risk of asthma development in children. Specific components/source markers such as black carbon, ammonium, and nitrate appear to play an important role.

Prenatal and perinatal home environment and reported onset of wheeze, rhinitis and eczema symptoms in preschool children in Northern China

Dan Norback et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to substances emitted during renovation and new furniture before and after birth may increase the onset of childhood asthma, rhinitis, and eczema. Additionally, indoor mold, mold odor, window condensation, and poor indoor air quality during birth may be associated with the onset of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema in preschoolers in northern China.

Increasing prevalence and influencing factors of childhood asthma: a cross-sectional study in Shanghai, China

Ya-Bin Hu et al.

Summary: The prevalence of childhood asthma in Shanghai has dramatically increased over the past three decades. Potential risk factors include male gender, younger age, preterm delivery, season of birth, elective cesarean section, allergy history, and exposure to passive smoking, latex paint, and dust. Potential protective factors include spending more time outdoors, having indoor plants, and cleaning rooms more frequently.

Breastfeeding duration modified the effects of neonatal and familial risk factors on childhood asthma and allergy: a population-based study

Yabin Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that male sex, high socioeconomic status, cesarean section delivery, having only one child in the household, and having a family history of allergy were associated with childhood asthma and allergic diseases. On the other hand, longer breastfeeding duration (> 6 months) was inversely associated with these diseases and also reduced the effects of neonatal and familial risk factors.
