Dissolved and emitted methane in the Poyang Lake

Wang HaiZhen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seasonal variations of dissolved and emitted methane in Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. It shows that methane flux from the lake to the Yangtze River is highest in the dry season and lowest to the atmosphere in the wet season. The study also suggests that the Three Gorges Dam in the Yangtze River would further intensify the transformation between lake phase and river phase, which could have implications for other large lakes worldwide.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from the high dam reservoir in longitudinal range-gorge regions on the Lancang-Mekong River, southwest China

Jiawei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the N2O concentration and emission flux from the high-dam Xiaowan Reservoir in the Lancang River region, revealing that various factors such as water temperature, DO concentration, and nutrients influence N2O emissions. The study advances our understanding of N2O emissions from high-dam reservoirs in longitudinal range-gorge regions.

The bacterial community structure and N-cycling gene abundance in response to dam construction in a riparian zone

Huanjun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated bacterial community composition, network structure, and N-cycling genes in the water level fluctuation zones of the Three Gorges Reservoir. The results showed distinct differences in microbial abundance, diversity, and network structure across different water levels, with interface sediments exhibiting unique patterns. Water level fluctuations were found to be the main driver of dissimilarity in bacterial community composition and N-cycling gene abundance, with AOA amoA and nirS genes being the most sensitive indicators in response to water level changes.

Spatial variations in diffusive methane fluxes and the role of eutrophication in a subtropical shallow lake

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that eutrophication plays an important role in shaping the spatial distribution of diffusive CH4 fluxes in lakes, with parameters related to eutrophication having a significant positive relationship with CH4 emissions. Distance to shore and water depth are inversely correlated with CH4 emissions and modify the effects of eutrophication.

Lack of methane hotspot in the upstream dam: Case study in a tributary of the Three Gorges Reservoir, China

Xiaoxia Bai et al.

Summary: This study reveals that damming of rivers alters the spatial distribution of carbon in sediments, leading to higher CH4 and CO2 concentrations upstream compared to downstream. During reservoir impounding periods, CH4 diffusive flux is higher upstream than downstream, while CH4 emissions are predominantly by ebullition, with significantly higher flux downstream during discharging periods. The increase in TOC in downstream sediment is attributed to riparian zone soil erosion caused by water level fluctuations.

Density currents reduce nitrous oxide emissions in a tributary bay of Three Gorges Reservoir

Xiaojuan Guo et al.

Summary: Reservoirs are significant sources of nitrous oxide, but there is limited understanding of N2O emissions from the world's largest reservoirs. A study on a tributary bay of Three Gorges Reservoir found that N2O emissions were reduced after impoundment, highlighting the importance of hydraulic conditions on N2O emissions from large reservoirs.

Greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and CH4) and inorganic carbon behavior in an urban highly polluted tropical coastal lagoon (SE, Brazil)

Luiz C. Cotovicz et al.

Summary: The study investigated the concentrations and diffusive fluxes of CO2 and CH4 in the heavily polluted Jacarepagua Lagoon Complex in Southeastern Brazil. The results showed high levels of GHGs in river waters due to untreated domestic effluents, while concentrations decreased in the lagoon due to dilution with seawater and degassing. Diffusive emissions of CH4 were found to be higher than those of CO2, making polluted coastal ecosystems significant hotspots of GHG emissions.

Three Gorges Reservoir construction induced dissolved organic matter chemistry variation between the reservoir and non-reservoir areas along the Xiangxi tributary

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: Hydrological alterations induced by Three Gorges Reservoir construction resulted in variations in DOM molecular composition between reservoir area and non-reservoir area in the Xiangxi tributary. Water intrusion from mainstream to tributaries was found to be the main factor controlling DOM variation, highlighting the important role of reservoir in DOM cycling.
