Characterizing the long-term occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their driving forces in surface waters

Ruifei Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed a decreasing trend in PAH concentrations, with seasonal periodic oscillations and higher pollution levels in winter. Vehicular emissions and coal combustion were identified as the main sources contributing to PAH concentrations and associated health risks, while the risks were determined to be low. Substitution of petroleum and coal with cleaner energy sources could help mitigate the impact of PAHs.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution patterns and health risks of PAHs in the soil-turfgrass system in the urban area of Shanghai. The results showed significant differences in the composition of PAHs between soils and turfgrasses. The findings suggest potential health risks for both adults and children through dermal contact with contaminated soil.

Microbial succession and molecular ecological networks response to the addition of superphosphate and phosphogypsum during swine manure composting

Liusheng Lei et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of superphosphate (SPP) and phosphogypsum (PPG) on bacterial and fungal community succession and molecular ecological networks during composting. Both additives affected microbial diversity, with PPG showing better results in both richness and diversity. Additionally, SPP had more adverse effects on fungal networks compared to PPG.

Predicting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water by a multiscale feature extraction-based deep learning approach

Liang Dong et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid surface water PAH prediction model combining two-stage decomposition and deep learning algorithm was proposed for accurate and effective prediction of PAHs in surface water. Empirical results from eight major rivers in Saxony, Germany showed that the model outperformed other benchmark data-driven methods, with good prediction performance.

Characterization of aerosol sources in Leon (Spain) using Positive Matrix Factorization and weather types

Fernanda Oduber et al.

Summary: This study conducted a one-year aerosol sampling campaign in a suburban area of Leon city, Spain from 2016 to 2017. The research found that traffic and secondary aerosols had the highest contributions to PM10 in hybrid cyclonic types with wind components from the first and second quadrant. Additionally, the study discovered that the dust factor had the highest contributions in northerly types, and linear models built for estimating the source apportionment of PM10 were strongly correlated with PMF models.

Assessing the performance of gray and green strategies for sustainable urban drainage system development: A multi-criteria decision-making analysis

Wenyu Yang et al.

Summary: The study proposed a comprehensive assessment framework for sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) performance, utilizing a combination of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) analysis and mathematical quantification. By implementing gray and green infrastructure strategies, the study found that the combined strategy showed the best overall performance in terms of sustainability.

Analysis of reach-scale sediment process domains in glacially-conditioned catchments using self-organizing maps

Kristen L. Underwood et al.

Summary: Given limited resources for managing erosion hazards and water quality along rivers, stakeholders in water resource management could benefit from tools to identify river reaches prone to sediment loading. The Self-Organizing Map (SOM) is a useful tool for clustering multivariate observations and analyzing complex, nonlinear river systems. Through multiple stages of SOM application, we identified seven sediment regimes in river reaches based on stream geomorphic assessment data.

Summary: Analysis of the spatiotemporal characteristics of air pollutants in Beijing from 2014 to 2019 reveals strong correlations between PM2.5 and CO/NO2, moderate correlation with SO2, and negative correlations with O-3. The pollutants show significant seasonal variability and different trends in different seasons, with PM2.5 exhibiting the most obvious decline.
