Air pollutants and risk of death due to COVID-19 in Italy

Marco Dettori et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between air pollutants and COVID-19 mortality in Italian provinces. The results show higher mortality rates in certain provinces, particularly in relation to PM10 levels. Spatial analysis revealed clusters of high-high values in Metropolitan Milan and the Po Valley area, suggesting the presence of a link between pollution and disease risk.

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and dementia incidence: A cohort study in Hong Kong

Jinjun Ran et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to PM2.5 is positively associated with a higher risk of all-cause dementia incidence, with an estimated hazard ratio of 1.06 per every 3.8 μg/m(3) increase in annual mean PM2.5 exposure. No effect modifications by age, sex, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease were found in this study.

PM2.5 and hospital admissions among Medicare enrollees with chronic debilitating brain disorders

Maayan Yitshak-Sade et al.

Summary: The study found that short-term high PM2.5 exposure significantly increased hospital admission rates among Medicare beneficiaries with chronic brain disorders, especially in patients with Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease/dementia. The largest effects were observed for pneumonia and urinary tract infections. These effects were also significant at exposure levels considered safe by the EPA, indicating that patients with CDBD are more susceptible to the impacts of PM2.5.

Association of Multiple Sclerosis with PM 2.5 levels. Further evidence from the highly polluted area of Padua Province, Italy

Arianna Scartezzini et al.

Summary: The study found a strong association between PM2.5 concentration and MS prevalence in the Province of Padua, with Padua City having significantly higher MS prevalence compared to the SPZ of the Euganean Hills Park. This suggests that air pollutants may be a potential environmental risk factor for MS in the Veneto Region of Italy.
