Quantifying the contribution rates of sulfonamide antibiotics removal mechanisms in constructed wetlands using multivariate statistical analysis*

Ling Zhang et al.

Summary: The study determined the contribution rates of substrate adsorption, hydrolysis, and microbial degradation in subsurface flow constructed wetlands for antibiotic removal through experiments and statistical analysis. Microbial degradation was found to be the main contributor to antibiotic removal in these wetlands.

Urban ponds as hotspots of antibiotic resistome in the urban environment

Liyuan Hou et al.

Summary: The diversity and abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in urban water ecosystems were explored through high-throughput quantitative PCR, revealing that urban ponds serve as hotspots for ARGs and share many genes with influents (IFs) and effluents (EFs). Stochastic processes dominated the assembly of ARG community in IFs and ponds, indicating the role of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in random horizontal gene transfer.

Fate and removal of bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in horizontal subsurface constructed wetlands: Effect of mixed vegetation and substrate type

Ammar Abou-Kandil et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of cropping method and substrate type on the removal of bacterial and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) by constructed wetlands (CWs) during start-up and maturation stages. The results showed that the removal efficiencies increased with operation time, with the tuff-filled serially planted CW demonstrating the highest efficiency in removing these genes. Metagenomic analysis revealed that most ARGs belonged to bacterial efflux transporter superfamilies, and although ARGs were removed, they were still detected in substrate biofilm with increased concentrations in effluents. The study suggested that a combination of serial plantation with high-surface-area substrate could enhance CWs' performance in removing bacteria and ARGs.

Horizontal and vertical gene transfer drive sediment antibiotic resistome in an urban lagoon system

Hongjie Wang et al.

Summary: The study conducted high-throughput quantitative PCR to characterize the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in the sediments of Yundang Lagoon, China. The results showed a significant increase in the abundance and richness of ARGs in the lagoon sediments compared to pristine lake sediments. Through co-occurrence network analysis, partial least squares-path modeling, and neutral community model, it was revealed that anthropogenic activities play a significant role in the assembly and spread of ARGs in urban lagoon ecosystems.
