An environmental risk assessment for a DDX-contaminated agricultural area in Turkey: soil vs. plant or human vs. animal

Mahmut Kemal Korucu et al.

Summary: This study assessed the environmental risks of an agricultural area contaminated with DDX on human and terrestrial species, finding high carcinogenic risk for humans and significant reproductive toxicity risk for birds and mammals. These risks can develop not only through exposure to contaminated soils, but also through consuming plants grown on these soils.

Intensive livestock farming as a major determinant of the exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides in raptors of the Canary Islands (Spain)

Cristian Rial-Berriel et al.

Summary: The Canary Islands are a biodiversity hotspot with many endemic species, but face high anthropogenic pressure, leading to contamination of wildlife by anticoagulant rodenticides. Detection of AR in animals showed intentional poisoning, with raptors having higher concentrations than other species. The study identified intensive livestock farms as a significant factor in raptors' exposure to ARs.

Validation of a Method Scope Extension for the Analysis of POPs in Soil and Verification in Organic and Conventional Farms of the Canary Islands

Andrea Acosta-Dacal et al.

Summary: The study tested and validated an easy method based on QuEChERS for extracting 49 persistent organic pollutants (8 PBDEs, 12 OCPs, 11 PAHs, and 18 PCBs) in soils and analyzing them by GC-MS/MS. The method was validated in terms of linearity, precision, and accuracy, with a matrix effect study conducted. Detection limits (LOD) ranged from 0.048 to 3.125 ng g(-1) and quantification limits (LOQ) ranged from 0.5 to 20 ng g(-1), except for naphthalene (50 ng g(-1)). The validated method was applied to 81 soil samples from farms in the Canary Islands, revealing residues of OCPs, PCBs, and PAHs in both organic and conventional production modes.
