Identification of mercury-containing nanoparticles in the liver and muscle of cetaceans

Xiaomeng Ji et al.

Summary: This study identified the presence of significant amounts of Hg-NPs in the livers of cetaceans, mainly in the form of inorganic mercury, while methylmercury was predominant in muscle tissues. The Hg-NPs were found to vary in size, being complexed with selenium, sulfur, and in some cases cadmium, lead, and silver. This research provides valuable insights into the biogeochemical cycle and health risks associated with mercury in marine mammals.

New insights into the biomineralization of mercury selenide nanoparticles through stable isotope analysis in giant petrel tissues

Silvia Queipo-Abad et al.

Summary: The study found that the formation of HgSe nanoparticles did not induce isotopic fractionation, and the presence of MeHg in tissues such as muscle and brain led to variations in Hg isotopic signatures. Screening of Hg biomolecules emphasized the importance of isotopic characterization of these complexes.

In Vivo Formation of HgSe Nanoparticles and Hg-Tetraselenolate Complex from Methylmercury in Seabirds-Implications for the Hg-Se Antagonism

Alain Manceau et al.

Summary: The study confirms that mercury toxicity may be underestimated when the molar ratio of selenium to mercury is relatively high, as mercury binds extensively to selenoproteins, reducing the storage of bioavailable selenium for detoxifying MeHg. Additionally, the research shows that Hg(Sec)4 could severely deplete the bioavailable selenium in muscle tissue, potentially causing harm from mercury toxicity in terrestrial animals.

Distributions of mercury and selenium in rats ingesting mercury selenide nanoparticles

Kazuaki Takahashi et al.

Summary: Selenium possesses antagonistic property towards Mercury and it forms HgSe nanoparticles in organs to reduce the toxicity of Mercury. However, in Se-deficient rats, the bioaccessibility of HgSe NPs is low. The results suggest that HgSe NPs are biologically inert and do not become a secondary environmental pollutant of Mercury.

Chemical Forms of Mercury in Blue Marlin Billfish: Implications for Human Exposure

Alain Manceau et al.

Summary: Research shows that top predator fish like blue marlin contain high levels of inorganic mercury, but the stable Hg-Se chemical bond in these fish may mitigate the health hazards of mercury to consumers. Monitoring the concentration of MeHg instead of total Hg in these predators could offer a more accurate measure of potential mercury exposure and may be more effective for food safety controls.

Development of Mercury Analysis by NanoSIMS for the Localization of Mercury-Selenium Particles in Whale Liver

Maria Angels Subirana et al.

Summary: Nano-SIMS is a dynamic SIMS technique with high spatial resolution and sensitivity, but has faced challenges in analyzing mercury due to low secondary ion yield. The introduction of an rf plasma oxygen primary ion source on NanoSIMS has enabled higher resolution and sensitivity for electropositive elements. This study successfully applied NanoSIMS for mercury analysis and mapping in biological samples, demonstrating its potential in both surface analysis and localization of mercury in complex matrices.
