Relative importance of hydrogeochemical and hydrogeological processes on arsenic enrichment in groundwater of the Yinchuan Basin, China

Song Feng et al.

Summary: Arsenic contamination in groundwater is a widespread issue with negative impacts on human health. This study focuses on the Yinchuan basin and finds that hydrogeochemical characteristics play a dominant role in controlling arsenic concentrations, while hydraulic gradients and groundwater flow conditions are important factors at the basin scale.

The effects of redox conditions on arsenic re-release from excavated marine sedimentary rock with naturally suppressed arsenic release

Akihide Kamata et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the re-release of arsenic from excavated rock in the presence of sulfate ions under different redox conditions. The results showed that the re-release of arsenic was mainly regulated by iron dissolution, even in the presence of sulfate ions. This suggests that excavated marine sedimentary rock should be reused under redox conditions where iron is not reduced or treated with chemical immobilization.

Naturally elevated arsenic in the Altiplano-Puna, Chile and the link to recent (Mio-Pliocene to Quaternary) volcanic activity, high crustal thicknesses, and geological structures

J. Tapia et al.

Summary: Compilation of data on water, sediment, rock, and condensed gas in the Altiplano-Puna of Chile indicates a natural enrichment of arsenic (As) tied to volcanic activity, high crustal thicknesses, and regional structures. Analysis reveals a positive correlation between As concentrations in saline and brackish water of salt flats and crustal thicknesses, with higher values observed in eastern regions.

Reduction of iron (hydr)oxide-bound arsenate: Evidence from high depth resolution sampling of a reducing aquifer in Yinchuan Plain, China

Yuqin Sun et al.

Summary: The study used high-resolution spectroscopy techniques in combination with groundwater composition and metagenomics measurements to investigate the oxidation states of arsenic and iron in sediments from the Yinchuan Plain in northwest China. Results showed that at shallower depths, sediments contained high levels of As(V), As(III), and Fe(III) (hydr)oxides, while at deeper depths, sediments were enriched in As(V), As(III), and Fe(III) (hydr)oxides, despite high As(III) concentrations in groundwater. The study supports active arsenic and iron reduction processes based on the contrast between the dominant forms of arsenic in groundwater and sediment, as well as the decreasing concentrations of sediment As(V) and Fe(III) (hydr)oxides with depth.

Vertical redox zones of Fe-S-As coupled mineralogy in the sediments of Hetao Basin - Constraints for groundwater As contamination

H. Y. Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the vertical changes of arsenic, iron, and sulfur speciation in sediments in the Hetao Basin using various analytical techniques. It was found that reduction of Fe(III), As(V) and SO42- species co-occurred in the aquifers, with iron oxides predominantly being goethite and hematite. Additionally, the study observed an increase in reduced arsenic and sulfur species with depth, indicating the formation of As-Fe sulfides may contribute to localized lower groundwater As concentrations.

Mineralogical controls on arsenite adsorption onto soils: Batch experiments and model-based quantification

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior of As(III) onto different types of soils through linear programming calculations and surface complexation modeling. The results showed the significant contribution of Fe-bearing minerals and non-Fe minerals to the adsorption of As(III), and highlighted the differences in adsorption capacities among various soil minerals. Comprehensive considerations are necessary when developing a reactive transport model for As(III) in soil systems.

Arsenic in the Pearl River Delta and its related waterbody, South China: occurrence and sources, a review

Chen Luo et al.

Summary: The Pearl River Delta is facing severe arsenic contamination, mainly due to geological sources and anthropogenic activities leading to high concentrations of arsenic, with mining and wastewater discharge being major contributors. Accumulated arsenic in rice fields poses a health risk to local residents in the area.

Arsenic fractionation and mobility in sulfidic wetland soils during experimental drying

Petr Drahota et al.

Summary: This study examined the mobility of As, Fe, S, and trace metals in wetland soils through selective chemical extractions, S isotopes, and X-ray diffraction during saturation and drying processes. The results showed that re-flooding triggered the reductive dissolution of As-bearing Fe (oxyhydr)oxides, while exposure and drying led to the oxidation of sulfides. The study suggests sulfidic wetland soils can be long-term sources of As during major drought events.
