Oil spill + COVID-19: A disastrous year for Brazilian seagrass conservation

Karine Matos Magalhaes et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic and the oil spill have had significant impacts on Brazil's marine ecology and economy due to government inaction, social inequality, and inadequate research on tropical ecosystems. It is crucial to analyze the short- and long-term effects of the pandemic and oil spill on the recovery of the economy and coastal ecosystems.

Spatial distribution, sources and quantitative human health risk assessments of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban and suburban soils of Chile

Ronbanchob Apiratikul et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations and sources of PAHs in Chilean soils, finding higher levels in urban areas primarily from combustion sources like gasoline, grass, wood, and coal, while suburban areas showed potential origins from pyrogenic sources. Despite these differences, the overall health risks posed by PAHs were deemed to be within acceptable levels, with no harmful effects identified in the tested locations.

Marine protected areas in Latin America and Caribbean threatened by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Beatriz Zachello Nunes et al.

Summary: The study identified the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in marine protected areas (MPAs) in Latin America and the Caribbean, with potential occasional toxicity to organisms. Sediment and biota samples indicated varying impacts on MPAs of different management classes, with petrogenic and pyrolytic processes identified as the main sources of PAH, mainly attributed to proximity to ports, industries, and urban areas.

Dredging impacts on the toxicity and development of sediment quality values in a semi-arid region (Ceara state, NE Brazil)

Lucas Buruaem Moreira et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of sediment dredging on sediment quality in the harbor areas of Mucuripe bay, Brazil. It found that after dredging operations, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn concentrations decreased while levels of TBT dropped, but phosphorus, aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons increased. Toxic effects persisted due to post-dredging recontamination combined with other sources such as urban runoff, wastewater discharges, harbor activities, and antifouling particles.

Environmental fate of petroleum biomarkers in Deepwater Horizon oil spill residues over the past 10 years

Marieh Arekhi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term fate of three groups of petroleum biomarker compounds in Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill residues collected from Alabama beaches over a 10-year period. The results showed that some compounds degraded over time, while others remained recalcitrant. Despite some degradation, the relative diagnostic ratios of the biomarkers remained stable over the 10-year period, providing valuable insights for future studies on the long-term environmental impacts of oil spill residues.
