Environmental exposure to persistent organic pollutants measured in breast milk of lactating women from an urban area in central Poland

Peter Gresner et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the concentrations of PCDDs, PCDFs, and dl-PCBs in breast milk samples of 110 breastfeeding women from an urban area. The results showed significant correlations between dl-PCBs concentration and toxicity equivalent with mothers' age, as well as a positive association between total toxicity equivalent of all substances analyzed and the frequency of fish and dairy products consumption. These findings may provide a basis for further research on exposure to these pollutants and their mechanisms of action.

Levels and patterns of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans and polychlorinated biphenyls in foodstuffs of animal origin from Chinese markets and implications of dietary exposure

Shuai Sun et al.

Summary: During 2018-2019, concentrations and distribution profiles of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in animal origin food-stuffs from five regions in China were studied. Results showed higher levels of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in coastal regions compared to inland regions. Significant differences in homologue and congener distribution of PCDD/Fs and PCBs were observed between terrestrial and aquatic animal foods. Estimated dietary intakes of WHO-TEQ from consuming animal foods ranged from 3.57-19.63 pg WHO-TEQ/kg body weight/month in the five regions, with aquatic animal food and pork being major sources in coastal regions and beef, mutton, and milk in the Northwest region.

Dioxins in breast milk of Chinese mothers: A survey 40 years after the e-waste recycling activities

Ting Luo et al.

Summary: Studies in China have shown significantly higher levels of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs)/polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) in breast milk from women living in e-waste recycling sites compared to those in reference sites. The total toxic equivalents (TEQ) of PCDDs/DFs were found to be twice as high in the exposed group.

Summary: This study assessed the concentrations of POPs in breastmilk from Kampala, Uganda and their potential health risks to nursing infants, indicating a potential disruption of thyroid hormones and the need for further temporal studies with larger sample sizes to confirm these findings.

Exposure and risk assessment of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) for primiparous mothers and breastfed infants in Penang, Malaysia

Yin-Hui Leong et al.

Summary: The research found that lactating first-time mothers in Penang Island, Malaysia had relatively low levels of toxic substances, but there is still a risk of exposure to infants. Particularly in the Penang region, levels of dioxins and dl-PCBs in breast milk were closely related to years of residence.

Accumulation characteristics and estimated dietary intakes of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, polychlorinated dibenzofurans and polychlorinated biphenyls in plant-origin foodstuffs from Chinese markets

Shuai Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the levels and accumulation characteristics of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in nine pools of representative plant-origin foodstuffs from markets in five regions of the Chinese mainland. The results showed that cereals and vegetable oil contributed the most to the estimated dietary intakes of WHO-TEQ.
