Influence of chemical zoning on sandstone calcite cement dissolution: The case of manganese and iron

Elisabete Trindade Pedrosa et al.

Summary: Chemical zoning of crystals can significantly affect dissolution rates, with manganese and iron cation substitutions resulting in substantially lower rates. This finding is crucial for the improvement of kinetic geochemical models at the pore scale.

Coupling of diagenetic alterations and mechanical properties of Lower Permian siliciclastic sandstones: a pilot study

Alexander C. Monsees et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of sandstones are influenced by the initial detrital composition and authigenic alterations during diagenesis, with porosity controlling key parameters such as density, UCS, and E. The presence of clay minerals and mechanical and chemical compaction during diagenesis are linked to porosity reduction and affect the mechanical properties. The horizontal contact lengths of grains normalized to their diameter and porosity play a significant role in controlling UCS and E, as reflected by the rock strength index S-R.

Pore-Scale Imaging and Modelling of Reactive Flow in Evolving Porous Media: Tracking the Dynamics of the Fluid-Rock Interface

Catherine Noiriel et al.

Summary: This article reviews recent advances in pore-scale imaging and reactive flow modelling applied to interface dynamics, emphasizing the unique advantage of digital rocks in tracking interface evolution and the complementary role of pore-scale reactive transport modelling in laboratory experiments. The integration of sub-voxel porosity in advanced multi-scale models is discussed, along with examples illustrating the dynamics of interfaces under different transport regimes and rock matrix properties. The challenges associated with precipitation processes, rock texture, and upscaling to larger scales are also addressed.

Implementing Heterogeneous Crystal Surface Reactivity in Reactive Transport Simulations: The Example of Calcite Dissolution

Summary: This study investigated the impact of surface topography heterogeneity on the dissolution rate of calcite through a 3D reactive transport simulation, introducing and validating heterogeneous surface reactivity. The novel parametrization allows for the simulation of surface-controlled heterogeneous reactivity in mineral surface dissolution reactive transport simulations.

Simulating permeability reduction by clay mineral nanopores in a tight sandstone by combining computer X-ray microtomography and focussed ion beam scanning electron microscopy imaging

Arne Jacob et al.

Summary: The study successfully investigates the impact of clay minerals at the nanometer scale on the permeability of tight reservoir sandstone samples using a combination of FIB-SEM and X-ray tomographic rock core scans. By defining microporous domains and calculating permeability, a more accurate representation of reservoir rock permeability was achieved compared to estimation based solely on mu XCT images.
