Chloroacetamide herbicide pretilachlor induces genotoxicity in the fresh water fish Clarias batrachus

Summary: In this study, the genotoxic effect of the herbicide pretilachlor on Clarias batrachus was evaluated using the micronucleus test and comet assay. Fish exposed to sub-lethal concentrations of pretilachlor showed increasing genetic damage with higher herbicide concentrations, reaching a maximum at day 30 and decreasing to a minimum at day 60.

Effect of pesticides on erythrocytes of indigenous fish Labeo rohita

Comet assay: a versatile but complex tool in genotoxicity testing

Summary: The comet assay is a versatile method for measuring DNA strand breaks in individual cells, with modified versions able to detect oxidized DNA bases and reveal DNA damage induced indirectly by reactive oxygen species. Despite being semi-quantitative, there are possible approaches to improve DNA damage quantitation and enhance protocol standardization for comparability. The in vivo comet assay has an advantage over the micronucleus erythrocyte test as it can be applied to any organ and has been used in risk assessment for specific food contaminants.
