Melatonin mitigates UV-B stress via regulating oxidative stress response, cellular redox and alternative electron sinks in Arabidopsis thaliana

Hasan Haskirli et al.

Summary: Melatonin can alleviate the effects of UV-B stress on Arabidopsis thaliana plants by reducing lipid peroxidation levels and increasing F-v/F-m values. The treatment with melatonin can reduce the activities of superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, and ascorbate peroxidase induced by UV-B stress, while differentially regulating the expression of certain genes. Additionally, melatonin treatment seems to lower the oxidative load in mitochondria, as indicated by the decreased expression of alternative oxidase genes in UV-B + melatonin treated plants compared to only UV-B treated plants.
