PM2.5-bound silicon-containing secondary organic aerosols (Si-SOA) in Beijing ambient air

Jingsha Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence of silicon-containing secondary organic aerosols in Beijing using PM2.5 samples collected during summer and winter periods. The oxidation of VMS resulted in hydrophilic polar semi-volatile and non-volatile oxidation products, contributing to the formation of secondary organic Si (SO-Si). While the average concentrations of SO-Si and Si-SOA were relatively low, they accounted for a small percentage of PM2.5 mass but increased on certain days. Net solar radiation was found to be positively correlated with SO-Si levels in summer, suggesting seasonally different formation mechanisms.

An automated method for thermal-optical separation of aerosol organic/elemental carbon for 13C analysis at the sub-μgC level: A comprehensive assessment

Peng Yao et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for C-13 analysis in carbonaceous aerosols fractions, effectively separating and analyzing OC, EC, and other specific fractions. The use of thermal-optical method for OC/EC separation for C-13 analysis was successful, but challenges exist with artifacts such as pOC affecting the C-13 signature. Further testing on real aerosol samples revealed potential implications for source apportionment studies.

13C signatures of aerosol organic and elemental carbon from major combustion sources in China compared to worldwide estimates

Peng Yao et al.

Summary: This study presents 13C signatures of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) for different sources in China and recommends composite 13C source signatures of EC for improved precision in dual-isotope source apportionment studies. The results show that EC is a better tracer for C4 plant burning emissions than total carbon (TC) and that the 13C signatures of OC vary with desorption temperature.

Stable carbon isotopic composition of biomass burning emissions - implications for estimating the contribution of C3 and C4 plants

Roland Vernooij et al.

Summary: Landscape fires are important sources of greenhouse gases and aerosols in the atmosphere. Stable carbon isotopes can be used to trace the contribution of C3 and C4 plants in fire emissions, but there are uncertainties in quantifying their relative contribution due to significant isotopic fractionation in combustion products. Further research is needed to understand and quantify the complex relationship between C3 and C4 plant contributions in landscape fire emissions.

Real-time organic aerosol chemical speciation in the indoor environment using extractive electrospray ionization mass spectrometry

Wyatt L. Brown et al.

Summary: This study presents quantitative measurements of molecular ions corresponding to diverse aerosol-phase species in indoor air at a time resolution of five seconds using EESI-MS for the first time. The complex spectra of EESI-MS were screened to extract chemical information, demonstrating the method's ability to quantify a large fraction of OA species. Comparisons with other instruments such as AMS and FIGAERO-CIMS showed good correlation and similar signal levels, indicating the effectiveness of EESI-MS in identifying co-emitted gas- and aerosol-phase species.

Summary: The study found that D4TOH and synthetic musks were commonly present in fine particulate matter collected in Atlanta and Houston, indicating a potential impact of personal care products on urban air quality. Gas chromatographic retention data reported for the first time in this study helps others in identifying these compounds to assess the impact of PCPs on secondary organic aerosol formation.

Development of a New Passive Sampling Method for the Measurement of Atmospheric Linear and Cyclic Volatile Methyl Siloxanes

Fulya Okan et al.

Summary: A new passive sampling method was developed and characterized to measure atmospheric volatile methyl siloxanes. The precision of the method was very good and uptake of VMS was highly linear. Compared to other methods, this new method has advantages in sampler size, sampling rate, and detection limit.

Methylsiloxanes in petroleum refinery facility: Their sources, emissions, environmental distributions and occupational exposure

Nannan Liu et al.

Summary: High concentrations of methylsiloxanes were found in crude oil, additives, and petroleum products from a petroleum refinery facility in China. The potential emissions of methylsiloxanes in this facility were confirmed by their obvious emission through exhaust-gas and wastewater outlets. The levels of methylsiloxanes in air, soil, and plasma samples from this facility were significantly higher than those from surrounding areas.

Large Emissions of Low-Volatility Siloxanes during Residential Oven Use

Erin F. Katz et al.

Summary: A study found that cooking activities, especially using an oven, can significantly increase the emission of low-volatility siloxanes indoors. These siloxanes make up a surprisingly large fraction of total emitted submicrometer particle mass. The research also estimated that approximately 75% of the low-volatility siloxane mass was ventilated outdoors.
