In-plane and out-of-plane seismic damage of masonry infills in existing r.c. structures: the case study of De Gasperi-Battaglia school in Norcia

Fabio Mazza et al.

Summary: There is a significant correlation between the in-plane and out-of-plane damage propagation of masonry infills after strong earthquakes, which poses a serious problem for the vulnerability of public buildings such as schools. This study investigates the effects of different in-plane and out-of-plane modelling assumptions of masonry infills on their seismic damage, using the example of the state secondary school De Gasperi-Battaglia in Norcia, Italy. The heterogeneity of infill typologies was examined, with different assumptions for the behavior of structural masonry infills explored.

Experimental study on out-of-plane behaviour of an infilled masonry wall with damping layer joint

Yun Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the OOP behavior and resistance mechanism of a DIW with different types of DLJs. The results show that a DIW with a MAW-based DLJ resists OOP force mainly through the bending of masonry unit, while a DIW with mortar-based DLJ resists through arching action and bending. Both types exhibit ductile behavior and can resist maximum earthquake action, with MAW DLJ having lower OOP capacity.

Performance-based seismic design framework for inertia-sensitive nonstructural components in base-isolated buildings

Michelle C. Chen et al.

Summary: Damage to building structural systems during earthquakes has led to downtime and economic losses, driving the need for earthquake protection measures such as base isolation to be incorporated. It is crucial to ensure appropriate design of nonstructural components within buildings with critical functions. The current use of prescriptive code requirements developed for fixed-based buildings may not be suitable for base-isolated buildings, necessitating a performance-based seismic design framework for nonstructural components.

Floor spectra for bare and infilled reinforced concrete frames designed according to Eurocodes

Mariano Di Domenico et al.

Summary: Nonlinear time-history analyses were conducted to evaluate the floor response spectra of bare and infilled reinforced concrete framed buildings designed according to Eurocode provisions for different seismic action intensities. The study investigated the impact of different building types and the in-plane/out-of-plane interaction on floor response spectra, as well as the main parameters influencing the shape and amplitude of these spectra.

Effect of structural characteristics on damping modification factors for floor response spectra in RC buildings

Mitesh Surana et al.

Summary: The study investigates the elastic FRS at different floor levels, deriving damping modification factors (DMFs) influenced by NSC and building structure characteristics, including NSC damping ratio, tuning ratio, modal periods, and level of building structure's inelasticity. A design-oriented multilinear model is proposed to compute DMFs for elastic FRS, validated through comparison with time-history analyses on different RC frame building and ground-motion records, for use in seismic design of NSCs in inelastic building structures.
