Mode I and II R-curves characterization of the Maritime Pine and Spruce under the same geometry

Edouard Sorin et al.

Summary: This study provides detailed data on the quasi-brittle behavior of maritime pine and spruce using R-curves. The method used in this study for R-curve characterization is an improved version of the method presented by Lespine (2007), which is automated and based on measurement errors. The study investigates the influence of crack plane orientation and density on fracture mechanisms and highlights the differences between spruce and maritime pine.

Modeling approach to estimate the bending strength and failure mechanisms of laminated timber beams

Christoffer Vida et al.

Summary: The numerical simulation of four-point bending tests on glued laminated timber (GLT) beams requires an adequate description of the material behavior and relevant failure mechanisms. This paper proposes a modeling approach to reliably estimate the bending strength and failure mechanisms of GLT beams, which is validated by simulating experimentally tested GLT beams. The results show the importance of considering discrete cracks and the variability of knot geometries in accurately simulating the failure mechanisms of GLT beams.

An experimental analysis of the end-notched flexure composite laminates beams with elastic couplings

Jakub Rzeczkowski

Summary: This experimental study focused on the behavior of composite beams with elastic couplings in the end-notched flexure test, testing carbon/epoxy laminates with specific stacking sequences and different delamination interfaces. The results revealed that elastic couplings influenced intense bridging phenomena and contributed to a more extensive fracture process zone and mode III in total delamination resistance. The standardized ENF procedure can still be applied to determine the fracture toughness of laminates with elastic couplings, with the assistance of additional data reduction schemes and techniques or numerical analysis.

Mode II critical stress intensity factor of solid wood obtained from the asymmetric four-point bend fracture test using groove-free and side-grooved samples

Hiroshi Yoshihara et al.

Summary: The Mode II fracture critical stress intensity factor (K-IIc) values obtained from the asymmetric four-point bend fracture (AFPBF) tests and three-point bend end-notched flexure (3ENF) tests on western hemlock samples showed significant differences, which were effectively reduced by introducing an additional crack length Delta into the data reduction process. This indicates that the K-IIc value can be accurately determined by considering the Delta value and results from previous Mode II fracture mechanics tests.
