Environmental life cycle assessment of heating systems in the UK: Comparative assessment of hybrid heat pumps vs. condensing gas boilers

Haodong Lin et al.

Summary: The study conducted a comparative life cycle assessment of a condensing gas boiler and a hybrid heat pump for a common type of existing houses in the UK, showing that the hybrid heat pump potentially saves 30% of greenhouse gas emissions compared to the condensing gas boiler. However, the hybrid heat pump emits more pollutants in terms of human toxicity, water depletion, and metal depletion.

A comparative environmental life cycle assessment between a condensing boiler and a gas driven absorption heat pump

Jacopo Famiglietti et al.

Summary: This study compares the environmental profiles of a condensing boiler and a gas driven absorption heat pump for space heating and domestic hot water in old buildings, finding that despite higher electricity consumption, the gas driven absorption heat pump has a lower environmental profile due to lower natural gas usage in the use phase.

Environmental Life Cycle Assessment scenarios for a district heating network. An Italian case study

Jacopo Famiglietti et al.

Summary: District heating networks have great potential for decarbonization and improving the environmental profile of the European building sector. Despite higher CO₂ emissions compared to heat pumps, the integration of renewables may make district heating have an equivalent climate change impact in the future.

Embodied GHG Emissions of Wooden Buildings-Challenges of Biogenic Carbon Accounting in Current LCA Methods

C. E. Andersen et al.

Summary: Buildings are crucial in achieving the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's target of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. Increasing the use of wood in construction is a proposed strategy to reduce the embodied greenhouse gas emissions of buildings. This study analyzes existing life cycle assessments of wooden buildings, finding that the average reported values of embodied emissions in wooden buildings are lower than in general buildings. The majority of assessments in wooden buildings apply similar methods and often overlook biogenic carbon, highlighting the need for increased focus on methodological variability and transparency in biogenic carbon accounting to enhance comparability and accuracy in emission results.
