Catalytic methane decomposition to boost the energy transition: Scientific and technological advancements

Luis Alves et al.

Summary: The decarbonization of the energy sector to avoid irreversible global warming is critical. Hydrogen is seen as a suitable alternative to fossil fuels, with catalytic methane decomposition showing potential for CO2-free hydrogen production. However, challenges related to catalyst deactivation due to carbon clogging have hindered the industrialization of this process.

Effect of the two-stage process comprised of ether extraction and supercritical hydrodeoxygenation on pyrolysis oil upgrading

Hoda Shafaghat et al.

Summary: Ni-based catalysts supported on HBeta and HZSM-5 were prepared and tested for catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of crude pyrolysis oil using supercritical methanol. Ni/HBeta exhibited better performance than Ni/HZSM-5, with the formation of coke primarily through condensation, rearrangement, and hydrogen transfer mechanisms. The type of supercritical solvent influenced the catalytic performance, leading to variations in product yields and coke content on the catalysts.

Impact of reactor materials on methane decomposition for hydrogen production

Hazzim F. Abbas et al.

Summary: The study experimentally demonstrated the catalytic effect of the internal surface of reactors made from stainless steel (SS310) on hydrogen production via methane decomposition, and investigated the effects of methane decomposition temperature and volume-hourly-space velocity on hydrogen production. The results showed that the catalytic activity of the SS310 reactor's internal surface increased with higher methane decomposition temperature and lower VHSV.

Valorization of rice husk to aromatics via thermocatalytic conversion in the presence of decomposed methane

Surendar Moogi et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the thermocatalytic conversion of rice husk for the production of BTEX chemicals, with considerations given to factors such as reaction environment, type of zeolite, and SiO2/Al2O3 ratio. The highest BTEX yield was achieved in CH4-D(650) with a H-2/CH4 molar ratio of 0.88, utilizing Ga/HZSM-5 zeolite with a Ga loading of 1 wt%. Excessive Ga loading on the zeolite was found to decrease the BTEX yield due to a decrease in available Bronsted acid sites.

Linear low-density polyethylene gasification over highly active Ni/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst for enhanced hydrogen generation

Abid Farooq et al.

Summary: The steam-gasification of LLDPE waste has been studied over nickel loaded on various supports, with Ni/CeO2-ZrO2 catalyst showing the highest catalytic H-2 selectivity. The Ce1-xZrxO2-delta solid solution in the catalyst was found to be bi-functional, accelerating both the water gas shift and the oxidation of carbon. The research provides an advanced route for recycling LLDPE waste into hydrogen fuel with economic and environmental benefits.

Hydrogen production via methane decomposition over nickel supported on synthesized ZSM-5/MCM-41 zeolite composite material

Lilia Alalga et al.

Summary: The catalytic decomposition of methane for COx-free hydrogen production was successfully achieved using 20 wt% Ni supported on H-ZSM-5/MCM-41 composite material. The composite material exhibited higher catalytic activity and stability, possibly due to improved access to active Ni metal atoms and their dispersion. This study provides valuable insights into the development of efficient catalysts for hydrogen production.
