Pore-Scale Characterization and PNM Simulations of Multiphase Flow in Carbonate Rocks

Haiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates pore-scale two-phase flow simulations in carbonate rock using the pore network method, determining rock and flow properties as well as properties of rock matrices. The predicted simulation results are in good agreement with experimental measurements when the image resolution is appropriate, and the paper also explores the impact of wettability and oil-wet pore fraction on relative permeabilities.

Estimating Fluid Saturations from Capillary Pressure and Relative Permeability Simulations Using Digital Rock

Nishank Saxena et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the impact of image resolution on image-derived fluid saturation in rocks, using capillary physics concepts and developing novel transforms to compensate for this effect in estimates of fluid saturation from multiphase simulations. The constraints of image resolution provide quality indicators for comparing digital rock-derived fluid saturations with those measured in a laboratory.

Simulating Coal Permeability Change as a Function of Effective Stress Using a Microscale Digital Rock Model

Huaimin Dong et al.

Summary: Investigating the coal microstructure under different effective stress conditions revealed an exponential correlation between coal permeability and effective stress. The number of large microcleats on digital coal samples decreased while the number of small microcleats increased with higher effective stress. The simulation results were consistent with experimental measurements, indicating that novel digital core analysis methods offer an effective way to study the physical characteristics of coal microstructure and simulate permeability as a function of effective stress.

Pore-Scale Imaging and Analysis of Wettability Order, Trapping and Displacement in Three-Phase Flow in Porous Media with Various Wettabilities

Abdulla Alhosani et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the key pore-scale processes that control flow and trapping in a three-phase system, such as wettability order, spreading and wetting layers, and double/multiple displacement events, under capillary dominated conditions. Different pore-scale events are observed under near-miscible and immiscible conditions, depending on the wettability state. This study provides insights into the behavior of three-phase flow in porous media and highlights the importance of gas-oil miscibility and wettability in controlling flow and trapping mechanisms.

Influence of pore structural properties on gas hydrate saturation and permeability: A coupled pore-scale modelling and X-ray computed tomography method

Jianmeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study utilized a three-dimensional micro X-ray computed tomography dataset to investigate the influence of gas hydrate saturation on pore structural properties and permeability. The results showed that grain-coating gas hydrate formed at low saturations plays a crucial role in reducing permeability, while pore-filling and/or cementing gas hydrate become dominating at higher saturations.

Multiscale Digital Rock Analysis for Complex Rocks

L. C. Ruspini et al.

Summary: The properties of complex rocks are influenced by heterogeneity at different scales, making it challenging to capture all relevant length scales in detail with standard digital rock analysis tools. A multiscale imaging and pore-scale modeling workflow is introduced to derive transport properties of complex rocks with broad pore size distributions. This workflow categorizes unresolved porosity regions, combines 3D rock-type and porosity maps, and treats unresolved network elements as a continuum Darcy-type porous medium. The methodology is successfully applied to heterogeneous rock samples with promising results in predicting transport properties.
