Investigation into adsorption equilibrium and thermodynamics for water vapor on montmorillonite clay

Xidong Du et al.

Summary: The isothermal adsorption curves for water vapor on montmorillonite were measured using a gravimetric adsorption system. Dent's model was employed to estimate the adsorption behaviors, with primary adsorption predominating at low vapor pressure and secondary adsorption becoming notable at higher pressures. Thermodynamics analysis showed that increasing vapor pressure raised adsorption spontaneity on primary sites but decreased it on secondary sites. Adsorbed loading affected isosteric heat of adsorption and entropy loss, with entropy loss increasing due to growing water clusters.

Experimental Study on Evolution of Fracture Network and Permeability Characteristics of Bituminous Coal Under Repeated Mining Effect

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: Mining of upper multilayers in deep coal seams generates cyclic loading-unloading stresses in bottom layers, which improve permeability and enhance coalbed methane gas drainage. Testing showed that permeability increased approximately by 5.8 times after loading-unloading cyclic tests. Different numbers of loading-unloading cycles produced similar fracturing effects, with the largest effect occurring within the effective stress range of 4 to 11 MPa.

CO2 and CH4 adsorption on different rank coals: A thermodynamics study of surface potential, Gibbs free energy change and entropy loss

Xidong Du et al.

Summary: The pore structures of three different rank coals were characterized by CO2 and N2 adsorption. The adsorption thermodynamics of CO2 and CH4 on anthracite, bituminous coal and lignite were compared, showing that anthracite has the highest uptakes for both gases. Temperature and coal rank affect the preferential selectivity of CO2 over CH4. Omega, Delta G and Delta S of CO2 and CH4 exhibit a U-shaped function with coal maturity.

Investigation of adsorption kinetics of CH4 and CO2 on shale exposure to supercritical CO2

Chao Qin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the adsorption kinetics behaviors of CH4 and CO2 on shale affected by exposure to supercritical CO2, finding a decrease in adsorption rates and different rates between the two gases. The study suggests three stages for the CS-ESGR project: Fracturing-Recovery, Replacement-Recovery-Sequestration, and Replacement-Sequestration-Recovery, providing valuable insights for future optimization design.

Evaluation of surface diffusion in microporous/mesoporous media using a numerical model applied to rate-of-adsorption data: Implications for improved gas permeability estimation in shales/tight rocks using drill cuttings

Zhengru Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed an integrated experimental and modeling approach to evaluate surface diffusion and permeability using drill cuttings, investigating the significance of surface diffusion in different adsorbate/adsorbent systems. A bidisperse numerical model was employed to extract surface diffusion coefficients and permeability/diffusivity values from porous materials, successfully matching pressure transient data on various materials and shale samples. The results indicate that surface diffusion is a dominant flow mechanism in micropores and mesopores, enhancing permeability/diffusivity.

The effect of subcritical and supercritical CO2 on the pore structure of bituminous coals

Yugang Cheng et al.

Summary: The treatment of coal with CO2 increases pore structure, mainly due to acid dissolution of minerals and larger pores in newborn minerals. ScCO2 significantly improves the pore size distribution compared to SubCO2. Fractal dimension of coal samples does not change significantly with increasing pressure.

Effect of supercritical CO2 extraction on CO2/CH4 competitive adsorption in Yanchang shale

Chao Qin et al.

Summary: This study found that the adsorption capacity of CO2/CH4 on shale decreases after ScCO2 extraction, but the feasibility of CS-ESGR is not affected. It is recommended to lower the reservoir pressure before injecting CO2 into shale reservoir, and consider the efficiency and engineering cost of CS-ESGR comprehensively.

Experimental studies on the changing characteristics of the gas flow capacity on bituminous coal in CO2-ECBM and N2-ECBM

Lei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examined the changing characteristics of gas flow capacity in ECBM, finding that the differences between CO2 and N2 tests affect the outflow rate, volumetric strain, and duration of each stage in permeability. The observation of different characteristics in the two tests provides new insight into the behavior of gas flow in coal reservoirs.

Effects of nano-pore and macromolecule structure of coal samples on energy parameters variation during methane adsorption under different temperature and pressure

Junjian Zhang et al.

Summary: The research finds that the reduction rate of surface free energy changes with increasing adsorption pressure, while increasing temperature leads to a decrease in adsorption capacity. High rank coal samples are more sensitive to temperature changes. Micro-pore structure has a significant impact on adsorption capacity.

Adsorption of CH4, N2, CO2, and their mixture on montmorillonite with implications for enhanced hydrocarbon extraction by gas injection

Xidong Du et al.

Summary: Understanding the competitive adsorption behaviors of CH4, N2, and CO2 on montmorillonite is crucial for enhanced hydrocarbon recovery in clay-rich gas-shale reservoirs. CO2 showed the highest selectivity and was able to stimulate CH4 desorption. Lowering the temperature increased selectivity and facilitated desorption, while injecting favorably adsorbing gases triggered desorption more easily.
