Characterizing Mass-Transfer mechanism during gas hydrate formation from water droplets

Huiyong Liang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the mass-transfer characteristics of water and guest molecules in dense hydrate structures during formation from water droplets. Experimental results showed time-dependent 3D morphologies and parameters of hydrate shells, revealing a transition in the water transport schema within hydrate shells from diffusion to permeation. The effective diffusion coefficients of gas and water molecules in hydrates were quantified, providing fundamental insights for optimizing hydrate-based techniques.

Modeling of hydrate dissociation surface area in porous media considering arrangements of sand grains and morphologies of hydrates

Youqiang Liao et al.

Summary: The volumetric surface area of hydrates (Ah) in porous media plays a crucial role in hydrate kinetics. This study developed a unified estimation model considering different packing arrangements and structural morphologies to describe the evolution of Ah during hydrate dynamic dissociation. The results showed that sand grain size, packing arrangement, and distance between sand grains affect Ah.

New Approach for Determining the Reaction Rate Constant of Hydrate Formation via X-ray Computed Tomography

Huiyong Liang et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates have been studied for their potential applications in energy storage, gas separation, and carbon dioxide sequestration. The study presents a new method for determining the reaction rate constant of hydrate formation using high-resolution X-ray computed tomography measurements. The experimental results showed an increase in reaction rate constant with temperature, indicating an activation energy of 56.6 kJ/mol. This approach may have broader applications in studying kinetics of other gas hydrates.

Prediction and management of hydrate reformation risk in pipelines during offshore gas hydrate development by depressurization

Zheng Liu et al.

Summary: A model was established to predict the risk of hydrate reformation in production pipelines during offshore gas hydrate development, studying the region and higher-risk drainage pipe. A new hydrate management strategy by adding additional pumps and heaters was proposed to effectively address potential hydrate reformation risks.

Hydrate blockage observation and removal using depressurization in a fully visual flow loop

Zheyuan Liu et al.

Summary: Hydrate blockages in gas transportation pipelines pose a serious flow assurance problem, and both the formation and removal processes require comprehensive analysis. The study revealed that LL plays a crucial role in the formation of blockages, with lower LL during shut-in operations leading to faster formation of blockages.

Prediction of hydrate formation and plugging in the trial production pipes of offshore natural gas hydrates

Jianbo Zhang et al.

Summary: Models predicting hydrate formation and deposition in offshore natural gas hydrate trial production pipes were developed to estimate the risk of hydrate plugging. Recommendations include installing a heater in the gas pipe and injecting inhibitors to reduce the risk of blockages and prevent costs associated with prevention.
