A new design of a staged fuel reactor is proposed to reduce the pressure drop during chemical looping applications. The design integrates a bubbling bed and a spouted fluidized bed. Cold experimental setup is established to gain insights into the gas-solid fluid dynamics of the new design. The results show different flow types and corresponding transition boundaries, providing a way to lower the overall pressure drop and reduce the fan energy consumption.
A new staged fuel reactor (FR), which integrates a bubbling bed and aspoutedfluidized bed, is proposed in the present work with regard to lowering the pressuredrop of the staged FR during chemical looping applications. In order to gain insights intothe gas-solidfluid dynamics of the new design, a cold experimental setup was established.Thefluidization dynamics of the staged FR was investigated based on the pressure pulsationsignal analysis using time domain analysis, power spectral density analysis, wavelet analysis, and the Hurst exponent analysis by theR/Smethod. There are fourflow types of funnel-likeflow, spout-fluidization, spouting motion, and unsteady spouting motion to be classified, andthe transition boundaries of the correspondingflow types were determined. The designprovides a way to lower the overall pressure drop of FR and then reduces the fan energyconsumption to hold the oxygen carrier particle circulation.
