Quantifying the technical geothermal potential from shallow borehole heat exchangers at regional scale

Alina Walch et al.

Summary: The utilization of borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) to extract shallow geothermal energy is a promising method for decarbonizing the heating sector, but thermal interference and available area must be considered. A novel method to estimate the technical potential of BHEs was proposed and applied to a case study in western Switzerland, yielding annual technical potential and maximum energy density.

Strategies for a transition towards a solar district heating grid with integrated seasonal geothermal energy storage

Julian Formhals et al.

Summary: District heating is crucial for TU Darmstadt to reach its emission reduction target for 2050. Various strategies, including efficiency measures, solar thermal collectors, waste heat utilization, and seasonal storage, are being considered. Dynamic system simulations are used to compare different transition strategies in terms of environmental performance and economic efficiency, with gradual construction of solar thermal collectors and concurrent scaling-down of existing capacity being the most cost-effective strategy.
