The transition pathway of energy supply systems towards carbon neutrality based on a multi-regional energy infrastructure planning approach: A case study of China

Siming Song et al.

Summary: Achieving carbon neutrality requires reshaping energy supply systems, with a focus on infrastructure layout in system planning to improve transition feasibility. Results indicate that power systems and hydrogen systems will dominate in carbon neutral energy systems, and more efforts are needed beyond 2030 to achieve carbon neutrality.

Thermodynamic evaluation of hydrogen and electricity cogeneration coupled with very high temperature gas-cooled reactors

Xinhe Qu et al.

Summary: This study proposes two hydrogen and electricity cogeneration schemes based on the iodine-sulfur process for a VHTR with an outlet temperature of 950 degrees C. Energy and exergy analysis show that the overall hydrogen and electricity efficiency of S1 is higher than S2, at 43.6% and 39.2% respectively. According to the analysis results, the steam generators are identified as the components with the highest exergy loss coefficient and hold the key for improving system performance.

Energy demand and supply planning of China through 2060

Shuo Qiu et al.

Summary: China aims to stop adding to the global warming problem by 2060, but faces challenges due to rapid economic growth and heavy reliance on coal for electricity. Optimizing energy demand and supply planning for sustainability and economic feasibility is crucial for achieving carbon neutrality in the future.

Optimal structure adjustment strategy, emission reduction potential and utilization efficiency of fossil energies in China

Yingwen Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the optimal structure adjustment strategy, emission reduction potential, and utilization efficiency of fossil energies (coal, petroleum, and natural gas) for 30 provinces in China from 2010 to 2019. Results show that more than half of the provinces have the potential to reduce coal consumption, while the optimal adjustment for petroleum and natural gas varies among provinces. The CO2 emission reduction brought about by energy structure adjustment accounts for about 11% of the total emission, with central and western regions showing significantly larger reduction potential compared to the eastern region.

Energy and exergy analyses of a novel sulfur-iodine cycle assembled with HI-I2-H2O electrolysis for hydrogen production

Zhi Ying et al.

Summary: A novel sulfur-iodine (SI or IS) cycle integrated with HI-I-2-H2O electrolysis for hydrogen production was developed and simulated in this study. The overall energy and exergy efficiencies of the novel SI system are estimated to be 15.3-31.0% and 32.8%, respectively. The HI-I-2-H2O electrolysis section shows the highest exergy efficiency, primarily due to the transformation of overall electricity in the electrolytic cell to exergy.

Performance analysis of hydrogen iodide decomposition membrane reactor under different sweep modes

Rui Kong et al.

Summary: A one-dimensional non-isothermal hydrogen iodide decomposition membrane reactor mathematical model, considering both cocurrent and countercurrent sweep modes, was established to analyze the effects of reactor parameters on hydrogen iodide conversion and hydrogen recovery rate. The results showed that under certain conditions, the countercurrent mode can achieve higher hydrogen iodide conversion rate and hydrogen recovery rate.
