Lignocellulosic Materials for the Production of Biofuels, Biochemicals and Biomaterials and Applications of Lignocellulose-Based Polyurethanes: A Review

Antonio M. Borrero-Lopez et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest techniques and procedures for treating and modifying lignocellulosic materials to be used as precursors for biomaterials, biochemicals, and biofuels, with a focus on lignin and lignin-based products. Four main pretreatment types, including thermal, mechanical, chemical, and biological, are discussed, with particular attention given to the biological action of fungi and bacteria. The review highlights the vast possibilities of obtaining different final products depending on the selected microorganism and biomass. It extensively describes biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials derived from lignocellulose, covering not only the whole lignocellulosic structure but also the main biopolymers, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Moreover, the formulation of bio-polyurethanes from lignocellulosic materials is emphasized, especially in their applications in lubricant, adhesive, and cushioning material fields. The review also presents high-performance alternatives to petroleum-derived products such as adhesives, lubricating greases, and elastomers with improved properties.

Synthesis of Lignosulfonate-Based Dispersants for Application in Concrete Formulations

Sandra Magina et al.

Summary: The study focused on utilizing different chemical modification strategies to enhance the performance of lignosulfonates (LS) as dispersants in concrete formulations. The most promising products were found to be LS modified with poly(propylene glycol) (PPG), which introduced PPG chains through reaction with phenolic moieties in LS. The enhanced dispersant efficiency of the resulting products is likely attributed to both electrostatic repulsion caused by the sulfonic ionizable groups in LS and steric hindrance phenomena due to the grafted bulky PPG chains.
