Transformation of mono- to octa- chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in MWI fly ash during catalytic pyrolysis process

Minh Man Trinh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transformation of total PCDD/Fs in fly ash generated from municipal waste incinerators during thermal and catalytic pyrolysis processes. It suggests that using activated carbon for clean-up of CDD/Fs in fly ash is a cost-effective method. Additionally, the study shows that Ni/C is the most effective catalyst for PCDD/Fs destruction in fly ash catalytic pyrolysis.

Emission characteristics of dioxins during iron ore Co-sintering with municipal solid waste incinerator fly ash in a sintering pot

Hao He et al.

Summary: The co-sintering method is one of the most ideal ways to dispose of municipal solid waste incineration fly ashes containing dioxins. In this study, it was found that during co-sintering, a significant amount of dioxins brought in by the fly ashes was decomposed and then re-synthesized with a distinct distribution characteristic originating from the sintering process. Possible pathways for the formation of dioxins were identified, with the main pathways being recombination and condensation reactions in the preheating and dry zone.

Corrosion Resistance of Novel Fly Ash-Based Forsterite-Spinel Refractory Ceramics

Martin Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the corrosion resistance of fly ash-based forsterite-spinel refractory ceramics to various corrosive media and found that the mechanical and thermal shock resistance of the samples improved with increasing spinel content. All mixtures showed good resistance against corrosion to iron, clinker, aluminum and copper, demonstrating promising potential for practical applications.

The Performance of Concrete Made with Secondary Products-Recycled Coarse Aggregates, Recycled Cement Mortar, and Fly Ash-Slag Mix

Katarzyna Kalinowska-Wichrowska et al.

Summary: This article presents the properties of cement concrete using waste materials such as recycled cement mortar, fly ash-slag, and recycled concrete aggregate. Two research experiments were conducted to determine the optimal content of the concrete additives and their influence on the physical and mechanical properties of the concrete. The results show that the addition of FAS-RCM and RCA can improve the physical and mechanical properties of the concrete compared to traditional concretes made of natural raw materials and cement.

Determining physico-chemical parameters for high strength ambient cured fly ash-based alkali-activated cements

Amiya P. Goswami

Summary: The study found that the CaO/SiO2 ratio in the composition of alkali-activated fly ash/GGBS cements significantly influences their properties. Different strengths were obtained using mono-component original fine, medium, and coarse sized fly ashes. In bi-component fly ash and GGBS based alkali-activated cements, the strength decreases with increasing Al/(Na + K) ratio.

Class C fly ash-based alkali activated cement as a potential alternative cement for CO2 storage applications

Priyesh Jani et al.

Summary: This research aims to provide an environmentally friendly alternative to Portland cement for CO2 storage wells by comparing the mechanical degradation of Portland cement and Class C fly ash-based alkali-activated cement in a high-pressure and high-temperature CO2 environment. The results showed that CO2 reacted with water to form carbonic acid, reducing the pH of the water. Portland cement exhibited a significant reduction in compressive strength over time, while Class C fly ash-based cement showed no significant reduction in compressive strength even after 14 days of exposure.

Effect of a Mechanochemical Process on the Stability of Mercury in Simulated Fly Ash. Part 1. Ball Milling

Xinze Geng et al.

Summary: Mechanochemistry shows great potential in mercury stabilization, and the optimum MC stabilization process for SFA was identified in this study. Proper MC process can improve mercury stability by increasing the active sites and developing pore structure of SFA, while an improper process may lead to reduced stability and even secondary release. However, further improvement is needed for the stabilization performance of SFA.

Development of phosphorus-based inhibitors for PCDD/Fs suppression

Shengyong Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inhibition mechanisms of sulfur-, nitrogen- and phosphorus-based inhibitors on the de novo synthesis of PCDD/F. It found that different inhibitors had significant inhibition effects on the formation of PCDD/F, with changes in the chemical bonds on the surface of fly ash and enhanced carbon oxidation after the addition of inhibitors.

Mechanochemical stabilization of heavy metals in fly ash from coal-fired power plants via dry milling and wet milling

Qixin Yuan et al.

Summary: Fly ash from coal-fired power plants is a major solid waste pollutant globally, and the mechanochemical method is effective in stabilizing heavy metals present in it. Both dry milling and wet milling methods can reduce the leaching rate of heavy metals significantly. Wet milling results in smaller fly ash particles, suggesting water weakens the agglomeration of fine particles.

Effect of TiO2, Al2O3 and CaCO3 nano-additives in singular, binary and ternary forms on the mechanical, thermal and microstructural propertites of fly ash supplemented cement matrix

N. Vanitha et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different nanoadditives on the mechanical properties and capillary permeability of fly ash cement mortars. The results show that nano-Al2O3 and nano-CaCO3 at a 2% addition ratio can significantly increase mortar strength, while the addition of nano-TiO2 does not have the same effect. Binary and ternary nano additive mixes had a positive effect on compressive strength and reduced capillary permeability after 90 days of setting.
