The role of hydrogen in the optimal design of off-grid hybrid renewable energy systems

Paolo Marocco et al.

Summary: The optimal design of off-grid hybrid renewable energy systems (HRESs) is a challenging task, which often involves conflicting goals to be faced. In this work, the epsilon-constraint method and particle swarm optimization algorithm are used to simultaneously address the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and CO2 emissions. The cost-emissions Pareto fronts of different HRES configurations are developed to gain greater awareness about the potential of renewable-based energy systems in off-grid applications.

Impacts of demand response from buildings and centralized thermal energy storage on district heating systems

Dmytro Romanchenko et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the potential for increasing indoor temperature is mainly concentrated in multi-family and non-residential buildings, while the potential for temperature downregulation is mainly utilized by single-family buildings; the value of demand response diminishes in the presence of supply-side thermal energy storage; and the application of both demand-side flexibility and centralized thermal energy storage is complementary in achieving the lowest total space heating load of buildings and the lowest running cost for district heating systems.

Hydrogen production costs of a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis powered by a renewable hybrid system

Ahmed Khouya

Summary: This work proposes a novel approach to hydrogen production using a polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysis powered by a renewable hybrid system. By establishing energy balances, it is found that the optimal performance of hydrogen production is achieved when the solar installation is three times oversized, with a levelized cost of hydrogen at 4.07 US$/kg for the optimal size.

Energy management of a smart autonomous electrical grid with a hydrogen storage system

Heydar Chamandoust et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multi-objective optimization model for smart autonomous electrical grids that considers responsive consumers and a hydrogen storage system, aiming to improve system reliability and reduce operating costs. The uncertainties of renewable energy sources and demand are modeled using Monte Carlo simulation approach, while the shuffled frog leaping algorithm is employed to solve the model and generate non-dominated solutions. The participation of responsive consumers and hydrogen storage system leads to improved operation cost and system reliability, as shown in case studies on a 24-node test system.

Optimal management of energy sharing in a community of buildings using a model predictive control

Behrang Vand et al.

Summary: This study examines the benefits of sharing on-site generated electricity within a community of buildings through peer-to-peer energy exchange, in order to minimize electricity costs. The novel model predictive control system efficiently reduces energy costs in a community with various energy sources, conversions and storage. By considering buildings in a community as a single entity, the annual electricity energy cost for single buildings can be reduced by 3.0% to 87.9%, and by 5.4% to 7.7% on the community level.

Investigation of temperature coefficients of PV modules through field measured data

Basant Raj Paudyal et al.

Summary: Broadband irradiance and temperature are significant factors affecting the performance of PV modules, but spectral variations also play a substantial role. A method for calculating temperature coefficients using long term data with spectral correction has been demonstrated in this study. The results show that spectral correction improves the accuracy of temperature coefficients and closer aligns them with datasheet values, with no degradation observed in long-term exposed PV modules.
