Passivation potential regulating corrosion resistance and antibacterial property of 316L-Cu stainless steel in different simulated body fluids

Yujun Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that the corrosion resistance of 316 L-Cu stainless steel improved with higher passivation potentials, due to increased Cr2O3 and Cu(OH)2 contents in the passive film. However, when the passivation potential reached 900 mV, the stability of the passive film decreased as Cr(OH)3 dissolved and transformed into CrO42-, leading to decreased antibacterial performance with higher compactness of the passive film.

Mechanics of Bacterial Interaction and Death on Nanopatterned Surfaces

Amar Velic et al.

Summary: Nanopatterned surfaces are believed to kill bacteria through physical deformation rather than rupture between protruding pillars. A computational analysis incorporating relevant continuum mechanical properties and adhesion interaction conditions has shown that nondevelopable deformation around pillar tips creates a critical site for impacting bacteria. Additionally, the geometry of nanopatterns can influence their bactericidal efficiency.

Plasma-Sprayed HA/Sr Reinforced Coating for Improved Corrosion Resistance and Surface Properties of Ti13Nb13Zr Titanium Alloy for Biomedical Implants

Puneet Bansal et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of surgical implants can be enhanced by developing plasma-sprayed strontium-reinforced hydroxyapatite coatings. Adding strontium to hydroxyapatite increases surface hardness and decreases surface roughness, leading to improved clinical performance.HA/Sr coated substrates showed higher corrosion resistance compared to bare and pure HA-coated titanium substrate, indicating potential benefits for future bone implant applications.

Corrosion Behavior of Anodic Self-Ordered Porous Oxide Layers on Stainless Steel

Lucia Helena Prado et al.

Summary: In this study, anodization of stainless steel AISI 316L was conducted to obtain self-ordered porous oxides. The corrosion behavior of the metallic substrate was found to be unaffected by the treatment, but crevice-induced intergranular corrosion between the oxide and the metallic substrate was revealed after electrochemical measurements in the acidic electrolyte.

Thermal oxidation of stainless steel substrate with tunable spectral selectivity: Transition from a reflecting to a highly absorbing Cr-Fe spinel surface

Pooja Ranganathan et al.

Summary: The study focuses on enhancing the optical properties of metals through heat treatment and investigates the effects of oxidation temperature and time on the solar absorptance and thermal emittance. Under optimized conditions, the heat-treated SS 304 sample showed high absorptance and low emittance. A plausible model for the high optical absorption in oxidized surfaces with low emittance is rationalized and validated through the experiment.

Ordered arrays of Si nanopillars with alternating diameters fabricated by nanosphere lithography and metal-assisted chemical etching

Michael Kismann et al.

Summary: This article investigates the tailoring of Si nanostructure geometries on large areas using nanosphere lithography combined with metal-assisted wet-chemical etching. It demonstrates the formation of Si nanopencils and nanopillars with single and multiple constrictions by varying the HF/H2O2 ratio of the etching solution. Controlled oxidation in water vapor results in nanoscale Si inclusions surrounded by an amorphous SiO2 shell, which could have implications for advanced thermoelectric devices.
