Efficient decolorization of azo dye wastewater with polyaniline/graphene modified anode in microbial electrochemical systems

Ruixiang Li et al.

Summary: Azo dye pollution is a global issue with current treatment methods falling short of emission standards. Microbial electrochemical systems show promise for decolorization, with electrode modification offering a method to enhance performance. Modification with polyaniline and graphene led to the highest decolorization efficiency, attributed to altered metabolic pathways facilitating extracellular electron transfer.

Statistical optimization for the efficacious degradation of reactive azo dyes using Acinetobacter baumannii JC359

Shabnam Ameenudeen et al.

Summary: This study aims to biodegrade reactive azo dyes as an effective treatment for textile dye wastewater. Results showed that Acinetobacter baumannii JC359 achieved decolorization rates of 98.8% for B-GDN, 96% for RP, and 96.2% for RNB, with degraded metabolites proven to be non-toxic. Docking studies revealed significant binding affinity between the dyes and azoreductase enzyme of A. baumannii.

Summary: Textile wastewater contains harmful compounds that can have negative effects on ecosystems, making treatment essential. This study investigated the biodegradation of textile wastewater in a bioreactor and found that wood charcoal was the most effective packing material for biofilm establishment and degradation of the wastewater. By integrating different treatment systems, including the UFMB-AB system, the removal rates of pollutants in the wastewater were significantly improved. Metagenomic analysis revealed the presence of genes responsible for degrading pollutants in the biofilm microbiome.

Summary: The indigenous halo-alkaliphilic bacterium Nesterenkonia lacusekhoensis EMLA3 showed efficient degradation of the recalcitrant reactive red-35 dye at high pH conditions, with optimized multi-parameter combinations improving the degradation response. The bacterium accelerated the decolorization process after repeated dye exposure, reducing the degradation time, and the metabolites produced during degradation were found to be non-toxic to plants.
