Human Intestinal Tissue Explant Exposure to Silver Nanoparticles Reveals Sex Dependent Alterations in Inflammatory Responses and Epithelial Cell Permeability

Kuppan Gokulan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that there are different responses to consumer products containing antimicrobial silver nanoparticles between male and female subjects. Males showed higher levels of inflammatory markers after treatment, while females did not show significant effects. Smaller size silver nanoparticles perturbed more permeability-related genes in males, while exposure to 20 nm nanoparticles resulted in a greater upregulation of genes in females.

Model Complexity as Determining Factor for In Vitro Nanosafety Studies: Effects of Silver and Titanium Dioxide Nanomaterials in Intestinal Models

Angela A. M. Kaempfer et al.

Summary: Research on the effects of orally ingested engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) emphasizes the importance of developing and utilizing in vitro models. By studying four different in vitro models, the cytotoxic properties of polyvinylpyrrolidone-capped silver and titanium dioxide can be observed. Adverse responses were only observed in monoculture models, while no adverse effects were found in more complex transwell cultures and in vivo murine tissues.

Neutrophil elastase inhibitor (MPH-966) improves intestinal mucosal damage and gut microbiota in a mouse model of 5-fluorouracil-induced intestinal mucositis

Kung-Ju Chen et al.

Summary: The study indicated that the overexpression of neutrophil elastase (NE) is a key feature in 5-FU-induced intestinal mucositis (FUIIM). Treatment with the specific NE inhibitor MPH-966 significantly reversed the adverse effects of 5-FU on body weight, food intake, and intestinal function. MPH-966 also restored the balance of gut microbiota, suggesting its potential as a treatment candidate for FUIIM.

Nanomaterials in the environment, human exposure pathway, and health effects: A review

Arindam Malakar et al.

Summary: Nanomaterials, both natural and synthetic, are regularly introduced into the environment. While natural NMs make up the majority, the usage of synthetic NMs across various fields poses potential environmental risks. Understanding the behavior of NMs in different environmental conditions and their impact on human health is crucial for future research and environmental protection.

Impact of Food Additive Titanium Dioxide on Gut Microbiota Composition, Microbiota-Associated Functions, and Gut Barrier: A Systematic Review of In Vivo Animal Studies

Emanuele Rinninella et al.

Summary: This systematic review assessed the potential associations between food TiO2 exposure and microbiota composition and functions. Findings suggest that TiO2 exposure may cause changes in gut bacterial species abundance and lead to gut dysfunctions. The study highlights the key role of gut microbiota in gut nanotoxicology.

The Interplay of Sex Steroids, the Immune Response, and the Intestinal Microbiota

Fernanda Pace et al.

Summary: Sex steroids play a crucial role in mammalian maturation and in the susceptibility of adults to various diseases. The interplay between sex steroids, intestinal immune response, and intestinal microbiota has been increasingly recognized. However, gaps in our understanding remain in developing an overarching model to guide the development of therapeutics for intestinal diseases.
