Reconciling the Size-Dependence of Marine Particle Sinking Speed

B. B. Cael et al.

Summary: Research shows that sinking particles play a critical role in the ocean's biological pump by sequestering carbon from the atmosphere. However, the sinking speeds of particles are not solely determined by size, but also by other factors, leading to significant variability in parameterizations of particle sinking and fluxes.

On the sensitivity of plankton ecosystem models to the formulation of zooplankton grazing

Fanny Chenillat et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that small changes in the form of grazing refuges in models of plankton structure and dynamics can drive fundamental differences in spatial patterns of plankton concentrations, species richness, pathways of grazing fluxes, and underlying seasonal cycles. Future plankton ecosystem models should pay particular attention to grazing formulations and implement size-dependent threshold refuges. This study calls for a new suite of experimental grazing studies to further advance our understanding of plankton ecosystem dynamics.

The Meridionally Averaged Model of Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (MAMEBUSv1.0)

Jordyn E. Moscoso et al.

Summary: Eastern boundary upwelling systems (EBUSs) are active regions in the ocean with significant impacts on ocean ecology, biogeochemistry, and global fish catch. Studied using models ranging from 2-D to global, the Meridionally Averaged Model of Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems (MAMEBUS) aims to combine the advantages of 2-D and 3-D approaches by parameterizing key 3-D processes in a 2-D framework. MAMEBUS facilitates future studies to efficiently explore the parameters controlling zonal variations in EBUSs.
