Variations in precipitation extremes in the arid and semi-arid regions of China

Lu Xu et al.

Summary: The study found an overall increasing trend in precipitation intensity, with most stations in low-altitude semi-arid regions showing non-significant trends. Frequency indices generally showed a decrease in consecutive dry days and an increase in precipitation days in arid and high-altitude semi-arid regions, indicating a trend towards wetter conditions in these areas. However, there were still some signals of decreasing precipitation intensity and frequency in certain stations in low-altitude semi-arid regions, suggesting an increased risk of drought at a small spatial scale.

Divergent long- and short-term responses to environmental gradients in specific leaf area of grassland species

Zhaogang Liu et al.

Summary: Specific leaf area (SLA) is a widely studied plant trait that reflects plant resource acquisition strategies. Despite consistent variation in SLA across different plateaus, short-term manipulative experiments showed that SLA increases with resource availability, suggesting an important strategy for grassland species in coping with ongoing shifts in climate.

Underground carbohydrate stores and storage organs in fire-maintained longleaf pine savannas in Florida, USA

Summary: This study demonstrates the wide variation in NSC concentrations among different species in longleaf pine savannas. Surprisingly, fibrous roots of some species stored higher NSC concentrations than many USO species. The relationship between NSC concentrations and pools remains strong after accounting for underground biomass.

Plant and microbial regulations of soil carbon dynamics under warming in two alpine swamp meadow ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau

Xia Yuan et al.

Summary: Increasing temperature has significant impacts on plant, soil microbial communities, and SOC contents in alpine swamp meadows; Warming promotes microbial biomass and functions, leading to higher plant biomass and increased soil dissolved inorganic nitrogen; The sensitivity of SOC physical fractions and chemical composition to climate warming suggests lower overall stability of SOC in alpine swamp meadows.

Atmospheric water vapor and soil moisture jointly determine the spatiotemporal variations of CO2 fluxes and evapotranspiration across the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau grasslands

Hongqin Li et al.

Summary: Alpine grasslands are important for mitigating climate change and regulating water resources. An analysis of CO2 and water vapor fluxes along a hydrothermal gradient on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau revealed correlations between ecosystem exchange, ecosystem respiration, and evapotranspiration with factors such as enhanced vegetation index, net radiation, atmospheric water vapor, topsoil water content, and bulk surface resistance. The coupling of carbon and water in alpine grasslands is influenced by moisture-dependent variables rather than air/soil temperatures.

Warming-induced shrubline advance stalled by moisture limitation on the Tibetan Plateau

Yafeng Wang et al.

Summary: Research has found that in the Tibetan Plateau, climate warming in the past few decades has promoted the expansion of willow shrublines, but after 2010, this trend reversed due to warming-induced moisture limitation, representing a tipping point of warming/drying trade-offs. Climate warming and drying are predicted to accelerate in the following decades, so alpine plant communities may be at an increasing risk of population decline or even range contraction.
