Integrating strategic planning intentions into land-change simulations: Designing and assessing scenarios for Bucharest

Simona Bacau et al.

Summary: Urban regions worldwide use scenario-based simulations to understand and cope with uncertain land-use changes, with limited attention given to the role of spatial planning. Findings suggest that while all future demands can be met under different scenarios, planning contributes little, and integrating strategic planning intentions may result in a higher loss of agricultural lands. This highlights the importance of considering the role of planning in driving land change at various scales in multi-level planning systems.

Overt and covert: The relationship between the transfer of land development rights and carbon emissions

Han Wang et al.

Summary: The study used the CLUMondo model to simulate changes in land use and carbon emissions under different policy scenarios in Fangchenggang, Guangxi, China from 2015 to 2030. Results show that implementing the land development rights transfer policy can mitigate carbon emission increases and lead to spatial transfer of emission rights. Increasing land use efficiency and intensity can meet urban land demand and reduce ecological land occupation.

An analysis of land use conflict potentials based on ecological-production-living function in the southeast coastal area of China

Lilin Zou et al.

Summary: This study constructed a spatial identification and intensity diagnosis model of potential land use function conflicts based on the ecological-production-living perspective of sustainable development, and found that there were potential conflicts in different land use functions in the study area. Management strategies should be tailored according to spatial distribution, manifestation, and conflict degree. The model and index developed in this study can accurately reflect the actual situation of land use in fast-growing areas, providing valuable references for land space planning and management.

Spatial-temporal pattern of land use conflict in China and its multilevel driving mechanisms

Song Jiang et al.

Summary: This study developed a methodology to derive the spatio-temporal patterns of land use conflict in China from 2001 to 2017, finding that areas with strong land use conflict had a higher frequency of land use change, with significant differences between two sides of the Hu Huanyong line. The main types of land use conflict in China included strong competition between cultivated land and grassland, rapid expansion of construction land, and high risk of desertification.

Analysis of the Spatiotemporal Changes in Watershed Landscape Pattern and Its Influencing Factors in Rapidly Urbanizing Areas Using Satellite Data

Zhenjie Zhu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatiotemporal characteristics and causes of landscape pattern changes in the Liuxihe River basin of Guangzhou from 1980 to 2015, and identified temporal and spatial influencing factors using grey relation analysis and Geodetector. Significant spatial and temporal differences in land use and landscape pattern changes were observed, with a large increase in construction land converted from cropland causing fragmentation and homogenization of the landscape pattern. Temporal changes were primarily driven by the growth of nonagricultural population and industry transformation, while landscape spatial heterogeneity was influenced by geomorphology and anthropogenic activities in different spatial locations.

Wenli Jing et al.

Summary: Accurately identifying potential land use conflicts is crucial for easing the intensifying contradictions between humans and nature. This study improved the model of suitability analysis and constructed a multi-objective evaluation model to explore the status of LUCs. The results showed a significant percentage of land in Hengkou District is at risk of conflict, with the largest conflicts between production and ecological lands located at the fringe of urban and ecologically dominant areas.

Relationship of Ecosystem Services in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region Based on the Production Possibility Frontier

Jinjin Wu et al.

Summary: The supply and demand of ecosystem services are affected by land use. Only a few studies have conducted in-depth quantitative analyses. This study adopted the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region as the research area. The CLUMondo model was adopted to infer the land-use pattern under protection, development, and natural scenarios in 2035. Moreover, the InVEST model was utilized to evaluate carbon sequestration, water yield, and soil conservation under multiple land-use patterns. It further drew the production possibility frontier to visualize the trade-off relationship and calculated the trade-off intensity index. Under the development scenario, the accelerated expansion of urbanized land will occupy a large amount of arable and forest land, which should be planned and controlled. Trade-off and synergistic relationships could be transformed under different land-use scenarios. The production possibility frontier curve for each ecosystem service trade-off and the optimal value of the trade-off configuration were plotted for different scenarios, and the trade-off intensity of ecosystem services was also calculated. This study combined ecosystem services with land-use regulations, revealing the link between ecosystem services and regional land-use pattern change, aiming to provide a reference for the synergistic progress of the ecological economy in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Evolution and Prediction of Landscape Patterns in the Qinghai Lake Basin

Yanli Han et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the change characteristics of landscape patterns in the Qinghai Lake Basin from 1990 to 2018 and predicted the changes in the period between 2026 and 2034. The results showed an expansion of grassland area and reduction of desert areas, with man-made factors playing a leading role. Government decision-making was deemed crucial. The simulation for 2018 to 2034 indicated little change in the proportion of various landscapes and stable spatial distribution, providing a reference for ecological environment management and protection policies in the Qinghai Lake Basin.

Understanding land-use change conflict: a systematic review of case studies

Lotte de Jong et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for food, water, and shelter has changed the way land is used, resulting in conflicts. Research has shown that population growth, overlapping land rights, ethnic fragmentation, and economic inequality are the root causes of conflict related to land-use change, while rises in land prices are the most frequently reported immediate cause. Reported institutional causes indicate that governance mechanisms are not fully equipped to handle the complexity of observed land-use changes.

The results showed changes in the intensity and spreading pattern of land use conflict indices, with population, GDP, and infrastructure density being strong drivers influencing land use conflict.
