Relationships of total phosphorus and chlorophyll in lakes worldwide

Roberto Quinlan et al.

Summary: The study found a sigmoidal relationship between total phosphorus and chlorophyll a in lakes, explaining 44% of the variation. Physical characteristics of lakes such as mean depth, Secchi depth, and elevation played a role in mediating the TP-Chla relationship. Nonlinear segments of this relationship were more prominent in lakes located in very cold or hot climates.

Trophic state footprint index model and its application to Dianchi Lake, China

Qing Chen et al.

Summary: A new assessment method for lake eutrophication, the Trophic State Footprint Index (TFI), is proposed based on lake-specific and segmented data, which provides a concise and accurate way to evaluate the trophic status of each lake. This method has been proven effective in Dianchi Lake of China and is simpler and easier to conduct than traditional methods.

Dynamic and driving evolution of lake basin pressure in cold and arid regions based on a new method: A case study of three lakes in Inner Mongolia, China

Qiuying Chen et al.

Summary: This study reveals the dynamic changes in lake basin pressure (LBP) driven by various factors in three different lake basins. It shows that rapid economic development and urbanization have significantly increased LBP in the past few decades. Different driving factors have led to distinct stages of increase in LBP, highlighting the importance of addressing these drivers in watershed management to mitigate the impact on water ecosystems.

Causal relationship between alkaline phosphatase activities and phosphorus dynamics in a eutrophic coastal lagoon in Lake Michigan

Changyou Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the causal relationship between alkaline phosphatase dynamics, transformation of phosphorus species, and phytoplankton biomass in a closed lagoon with seasonal cyanobacterial blooms. The results show that as water temperature increases, there is a depletion of dissolved inorganic P leading to an increase in cell-associated alkaline phosphatase activities, contributing to algal blooms. During cyanobacterial blooms, dissolved AP is spontaneously released, resulting in an increase of DIP concentrations. The findings provide new insights into the concurrent high APA and DIP in the water column and the relationship between AP and P species in aquatic environments.

No-linear dynamics of lake ecosystem in responding to changes of nutrient regimes and climate factors: Case study on Dianchi and Erhai lakes, China

Qiuying Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that UEAP is a key factor influencing algae dynamics, and incorporating UEAP and its driving factors into the model increased reliability. In Dianchi Lake, the Nitrogen phosphorus ratio (NPr) was the key driving factor, while in Erhai Lake, the total nitrogen (TN) and air temperature (AT) were the key driving factors. Changes in nutrients and climate drove UEAP into either a paralysis or sensitive phase based on lake-specific conditions, impacting algae density dynamics.

Stoichiometric and physiological mechanisms that link hub traits of submerged macrophytes with ecosystem structure and functioning

Qingyang Rao et al.

Summary: Eutrophication strongly impacts plant stoichiometric characteristics and physiological status. Through a study of 26 macrophytic shallow lakes, it was found that organ phosphorus (P), starch, and total nonstructural carbohydrate (TNC) contents are key traits affecting plant phenotype. Additionally, eutrophication not only influences community structure, but also affects plant biomass and ecosystem by inhibiting the predominance of more homeostatic species and the production of carbohydrates.
