Forest connectivity percolation thresholds for fire spread under different weather conditions

Andrea Duane et al.

Summary: This study used a total sample of 554 fires occurred between 1987 and 2019 in Catalonia, NE Spain to investigate the relationship between forest functional connectivity and fire size under different weather conditions. The results indicate that there is a forest percolation threshold for most types of fires, with forest connectivity exerting a positive influence on fire size until a threshold is reached, beyond which the landscape becomes continuous and other processes to control fire cease to have effect. The study also found that weather conditions such as windy and dry days do not have significant impact on the relationship between forest connectivity and fire size.

High fire frequency reduces soil fertility underneath woody plant canopies of Mediterranean ecosystems

M. Belen Hinojosa et al.

Summary: Spatial heterogeneity of soil properties plays a major role in regulating ecosystem structure and functioning. Increasing fire frequency leads to reduced soil fertility heterogeneity, potentially compromising the recovery of soil and ecosystem functioning.

Planning for future fire: Scenario analysis of an accelerated fuel reduction plan for the western United States

Alan A. Ager et al.

Summary: The study modeled an accelerated forest and fuel management scenario for 76 western US national forests, targeting wildfire exposure to developed areas. The research found that over 20% of simulated fires overlapped with fuel treatments once fully implemented, and approximately 20% of projects were burned prior to implementation.

Summary: Weather conditions are vital in wildfire activity, and future climate change may lead to different fire weather patterns, increasing fire risk. The projected longer and more severe fire season could result in changes in future fire regimes.
