Exploring the temporal and spatial variability of water and land resources carrying capacity based on ecological footprint: A case study of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration, China

Fengli Zhang et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of the Jing-Jin-Ji region, the ecological and environmental problems have become increasingly prominent. This study proposes a comprehensive evaluation method based on ecological footprint theory and GIS spatial analysis to assess the carrying capacity of water and land resources. By applying the method in the Jing-Jin-Ji region, it was found that many cities in the region were facing unsustainable status regarding water and land resources. The study recommends improving the management system of water and land resources and promoting sustainable and coordinated ecological development.

Mapping the environmental footprints of nations partnering the Belt and Road Initiative

Kai Fang et al.

Summary: The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) proposed by China has contributed to the growth of cross-border trade, but has also led to burden shifting of resource extractions and environmental emissions to less developed countries. Research shows strong spatial heterogeneity in the environmental footprints of BRI nations, with some countries being net exporters on the global scale. The findings highlight the importance of a global perspective in addressing environmental challenges and achieving Sustainable Development Goals throughout the BRI countries by 2030.

Development tendency analysis for the water resource carrying capacity based on system dynamics model and the improved fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method in the Changchun city, China

Ge Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an improved method for assessing water resource carrying capacity by combining fuzzy comprehensive evaluation and system dynamics modeling, allowing for dynamic calculations under different social development scenarios. The results suggest that by changing production modes and economic proportions, water resource carrying capacity can be improved for steady economic and social growth in the future.

Comprehensive evaluation and influencing factors of urban agglomeration water resources carrying capacity

Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: Appropriate water resources carrying capacity is crucial for the sustainable development of urban agglomerations. This study calculated the WRCC index of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration and analyzed the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of factors affecting WRCC. The results showed that WRCC in the BTHUA is increasing but the carrying capacity index is not high, with nearly 50% of cities still in an overloaded state. The factors affecting WRCC exhibited notable spatiotemporal heterogeneity.

Spatial-temporal patterns and influencing factors of ecological land degradation-restoration in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

Rundong Feng et al.

Summary: The study found a shift in ecological land from over-exploitation to balanced co-existence, driven by a transition in spatiotemporal patterns from adjacent degradation-led (1990-2010) to edge-expansion restoration-led (2010-2019). Urbanization rate and population density had a stronger promoting effect on ELD, while tertiary industry, topography, and soil conditions were more significant in ELR.

Vulnerability modeling, assessment, and improvement in urban metro systems: A probabilistic system dynamics approach

Hongyu Chen et al.

Summary: This research aims to develop a hybrid approach integrating system dynamics (SD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulation to evaluate the long-term vulnerability of urban metro systems. By merging multiple resource information, an SD model with 4 sub-systems and 16 feedback loops is constructed to reveal complex relationships among factors and simulate overall vulnerability. The study utilizes MC simulation to analyze sensitive factors and improvement strategies of metro system vulnerability under uncertainty, with promising results for enhancing safety and security in metro operations.

The spatiotemporal evolution of ecological security in China based on the ecological footprint model with localization of parameters

Ting Liu et al.

Summary: With the outbreak of the current global eco-environmental crisis, ensuring global and local ecological security has become a priority for many countries. China's social and economic development in the past few decades has led to many ecological and environmental problems, negatively impacting both China's and the world's ecological security. The Chinese government has actively participated in global ecological and environmental governance, raising ecological security to the level of national security, but still faces challenges such as deteriorating ecological security and threats from cropland occupation and fossil energy consumption.

Summary: This study based on the revised theory of relative resource carrying capacity and introduced the concept of relative fossil energy carrying capacity to evaluate fossil energy sustainability between China and the United States. The comparative analysis showed significant differences in RFECC between the two countries, with China showing an inverted U-shaped trend and the US showing a U-shaped trend. The gap in RFECC has been widening, with China's economic RFECC better than the US, while environmental and population RFECC are better in the US than in China. Coal and oil are suggested as breakthrough points for sustainable fossil energy and development in China and the United States.
