More pests but less pesticide applications: Ambivalent effect of landscape complexity on conservation biological control

Patrizia Zamberletti et al.

Summary: Our study found that increasing the presence of semi-natural habitats can boost predator populations by sustaining high predator density, which regulates and maintains pest density below the pesticide threshold. However, the overall presence of predators in the landscape helps stabilize the pest population by keeping it below this threshold, potentially leading to higher pest densities at the landscape scale. Additionally, the joint effect of semi-natural habitat presence and predator dispersal ability at the interface of hedges and fields results in stronger pest regulation and limits pest growth.

Landscape drivers of pests and pathogens abundance in arable crops

Summary: A large-scale study revealed a strong correlation between host crop area and pests and pathogens, while woodlands, scrublands, hedgerows, and grasslands had inconsistent effects on the studied spectrum of pests and pathogens, depending on the functional traits of the organisms involved.
