Predicting soil organic carbon movement and concentration using a soil erosion and Landscape Evolution Model

G. R. Hancock et al.

Summary: Explicit relationships and numerical models linking landscape and topographic characteristics with soil organic carbon (SOC) processes are necessary. The Landscape Evolution Model (LEM) calibrated in this study accurately predicts erosion and deposition, with erosion rates comparable to independent measurements. The majority of SOC is found to be transported in the top 2 cm of soil, and disturbance to the hillslope can significantly increase SOC export.

Summary: Landform evolution models are important for studying erosional stability and denudation rates. SSSPAM is a newly developed model that can assess erosion rates of catchment scale landforms and simulate soil development and environmental changes.
