Accelerated disintegration of in situ disconnected portions of sandstone outcrops

Michal Filippi et al.

Summary: The weathering/disintegration of sandstone is a complex process that can damage building stone. Disconnected portions are common in dry climates, often elongated parallel to horizontal surfaces. Physical experiments indicate that confinement by surrounding rock mass may delay the weathering process.

Evolutions of the unfrozen water content of saturated sandstones during freezing process and the freeze-induced damage characteristics

Lei Weng et al.

Summary: In this study, LF-NMR tests were conducted on frozen sandstone samples to analyze the unfrozen water content and changes in the freezing process. The experimental results show that the pore size distribution significantly affects the speed of water-ice phase transition, with larger pores leading to faster transitions. Freeze-induced strains in frozen sandstones increase rapidly between 0 degrees C to -10 degrees C, then stabilize, and the impact of movable water on freezing strain depends on pore size distribution.

Widespread woody plant use of water stored in bedrock

Erica L. McCormick et al.

Summary: Research has shown that woody plants across the continental United States access water from bedrock for transpiration, indicating that rock moisture is a critical component of plant-available water sources. This highlights the need to revise conceptual paradigms regarding water and carbon cycling to incorporate the role of bedrock water storage.
